Charles A. Pope (1818-1870) was the first dean of St. Louis Medical College when it gained independent status from St. Louis University in 1855. Pope served as dean until 1864. During his tenure, Pope had his father-in-law, the real estate magnate John O'Fallon, construct the first building for the medical school in 1849, which remained as its headquarters until 1892. He also was the youngest president of the American Medical Association when he was elected in 1854.
