The Lambda Chapter of Nu Sigma Phi (ΝΣΦ) was a medical sorority at Washington University founded in December 1922. The sorority was duly recognized on campus by Chancellor Frederic Aldin Hall, Edith Fenton, Dean of Women, and by Dr. Nathaniel Allison, Dean of the School of Medicine. Active charter members were Elvira Ostlund (MD23), Neva Skelton (MD23), Maude Lindsey (MD24), Elisabeth Thompson Koppenaal (MD24), Irene Therese Pieper Koenig (MD26), and Mable Freeman (MD26). The first slate of officers drew from honorary as well as active members. Beatrice Whiteside, Instructor in Anatomy, and Ella B. Lawrence, Librarian, were charter honorary members.

The Washington University chapter formed about four years after the first women were admitted to Washington University Medical School in 1918. Sorority activities were social and educational including teas, “at homes,” receptions, and talks. A housing committee reported on the possibility of a ΝΣΦ chapter house at Washington University in 1924. Each business meeting included a member’s report of research going on at the medical school. At one meeting, Dr. Kirsten Utheim-Toverud spoke of her work at Children’s Hospital. The records refer occasionally to other chapters of Nu Sigma Phi. The University of Illinois Chapter, for example, which formed in 1898 is mentioned. The minute book ends abruptly in 1924 without revealing what may have happened at that point or thereafter to the Lambda Chapter.
