The St. Louis Post-Graduate School of Medicine and Polyclinic was founded in 1884 to provide training in medical specialties beyond the level given in regular medical school curriculums and also to operate a small hospital and dispensary for the treatment of indigent patients.  These functions were housed in a two and one-half story building constructed for the enterprise at the southwest corner of Jefferson and Lucas Avenues.  The faculty, who were legally chartered as an “association,” were virtually the same physicians who owned and operated nearby Missouri Medical College.  The two schools merged in 1890, but a six-week “post-graduate” term beginning in April continued to be offered under the former school name until 1898.

In 1895, Missouri Medical College moved to an adjoining building on Jefferson.  Following affiliation with Washington University and merger with its medical department, the former St. Louis Medical College, the two Jefferson Avenue structures were converted to exclusively clinical functions.  In 1905, following internal renovations, they became known as Washington University Hospital, but all medically-related uses ended in late 1914 with the opening of the present medical campus.
