Dr. John Green (1835-1913) was a prominent ophthalmologist in St. Louis. Born in Worcester, MA, Green receieved his medical degree from Harvard  in 1865 after serving in the medical service for the Western Sanitary Commission and as acting assistant surgeon in the Army of the Tennessee for the Union during the Civil War. After completing his studies, Green moved to St. Louis, where he was professor of ophathalmology at St. Louis Medical College. He was a founding member of the American Ophathalological Society, the St. Louis Academy of Sciences, and the Archaelogical Society.
