Lee N. Robins was born August 29, 1922, in New Orleans, Louisiana. She earned a doctoral degree from Radcliffe College (Harvard University) in 1951, and joined the faculty of Washington University School of Medicine in 1954. Robins began her career at WUSM as a research assistant in psychiatry, and served as an adjunct associate professor of sociology on the Danforth campus from 1957 to 1963. Robins was awarded a full professorship of sociology in psychiatry in 1966, and became professor emerita in 2001. She founded and was the former director of the Master’s Program in Psychiatric Epidemiology at Washington University School of Medicine.

Robins was a leading researcher in psychiatric epidemiology and in the development of diagnostic criteria for psychiatric diagnosis. Her research led to the publication of her book, “Deviant Children Grown Up” in 1966, as well as over 250 papers examining suicide, substance abuse among adolescents and Vietnam War veterans, alcoholism, and antisocial disorders in children.
