Gerald A. Reeves was raised in Kirksville, MO. The son of an osteopathic doctor, his grandfather, Gerald Alfred Sparling,  was a "regular" medical doctor and an 1880 graduate of the American Medical College. Gerald Reeves entered Washington University School of Medicine on July 1st, 1942 in an excellerated medical program due to the Second World War. He graduated in 1945 and did his internship in internal medicine at St. Louis City Hospital.
