In her oral history interview, Nash discusses growing up in Atlanta as the child of a successful African-American physician father and music teacher mother. She relates some of her experiences attending Meharry Medical College in the early 1940s and coming to St. Louis for her internship and residency at Homer G. Phillips Hospital. Nash discusses establishing and running a successful solo pediatric practice and the racism and sexism she faced during her professional career. She also discusses her mentor, Park J. White, and some of their experiences fighting segregation in medical care in St. Louis.

Series 1 (General Hospital 21) and Series 2 (Consultant in Neurosurgery, Vietnam) contain files relating to Dr. Schwartz’s military service. Another important segment of this collection is comprised of his lecture notes in Series 3. The remaining series include photographs, certificates, films and videotapes, memorabilia, and the many awards Dr. Schwartz received throughout his lifetime.

Collection of Gasser's selected reprints, 1914-1927. Many of the scientific articles concern Gasser's work with Joseph Erlanger using a cathode-ray oscillograph to amplify and record electrical conduction, or action potentials, of nerves. Others are concerned with muscular contraction and the study and treatment of shock The collection also includes a bound copy of "Experimental Neurology," (Supplement 1, 1964) which contains Gasser's autobiographical memoir.

The Jacob G. Probstein papers include short transcripts of at least two oral history interviews with Probstein on Jewish Hospital (1977), Probstein's short histories of the pancreatitis research group: "Sam Gray/ Michael Somogyi/ May Fund and Pancreatis"(1979), and two letters from Helen Graham about Evarts A. Graham(1965-1968). The Jacob G. Probstein reprints, 1924-1970 are the bulk of the material. The focus of the oral histories are Jewish Hospital of St. Louis, its chiefs of surgery, its patients (the Jewish community), its donors, the role of nurses and nurse administrators, Dr. Michael Somogyi and the pancreatitis and diabetes research group, the clinics, and early operative techniques in the old Delmar location of the hospital.

O’Leary’s career illustrates the establishment of neurology at Washington University School of Medicine as a distinct medical discipline.  The O’Leary papers include correspondence, lectures, manuscripts, card files, photographs, certificates, and reprints of articles.  They document his work in many areas of neurological research, but particularly his investigations in the diagnosis and treatment of ataxia and epilepsy.  There is also significant material on O’Leary’s contributions to American Neurological Association, Epilepsy Association of America, Epilepsy Foundation of America, WUSM Administration, and WUSM Department of Neurology.

This small collection contains letters to Cook from John H. Kennerly, Dean of the WU Dental School; Charles Rice, Secretary, The Jewish Hospital of St. Louis; and Philip A. Shaffer, Dean Washington University Medicine School, concerning Cook's ineligibility to service in the US Army Medical Corps due to the need of the Schools and Hospital to retain him for medical service, 1917. Also included is a handwritten draft of a letter, presumably by Cook, stating he is a conscientious objector and willing only to provide medical care to soliders unable to return to active duty, August 27, 1918. Includes a reprint of the article: Taussig, Albert E., and Jerome E. Cook. This collection contains records of Jessie Ternberg’s career as a pediatric surgeon at Saint Louis Children’s Hospital and as a professor of surgery at Washington University School of Medicine.

The collection primarily contains photographs of children, likely patients, that Dr. Ternberg kept in her office at Saint Louis Children’s Hospital and reprints of Dr. Ternberg’s publications. The collection also includes correspondence with patients and patients’ families, Dr. Ternberg’s curriculum vitae, article drafts and lecture scripts, Dr. Ternberg’s white coat, several surgical instruments, and a video recording of a memorial tribute to Dr. Ternberg after her death.

Many of the photographs in the collection were displayed on a bulletin board or in frames in Dr. Ternberg’s office. The photographs and correspondence show the long relationships the children and families had with Dr. Ternberg and the impact she had on their lives; photographs from several families span a decade or more. The correspondence includes several thank you notes from patients and their families written to Dr. Ternberg many years following the time she served as their doctor; two notes were sent at least 20 years later.

Pierce discusses the career of his colleague Alfred Goldman, a 1920 graduate of the Washington University School of Medicine and, for fifty years, a member of the clinical faculty of the school. Pierce describes some of Goldman’s early research on the effect of chilling on the development of upper respiratory disease, the physiology of hyperventilation, and tetany. Goldman’s great skill working and relating to both his patients and with students is described. Pierce comments on Goldman’s careful scholarship and tenacity as a researcher as well as his dedication to his family and to his patients.
