Samuel B. Guze Papers

The Samuel B. Guze Papers are arranged in eleven organizational series. The bulk of this large collection is contained in Series 3 (General Files) and Series 5 (Manuscripts). Included in the Guze Papers are letters, journal articles, and handwritten notes. However, a significant portion of the collection consists of drafts of articles that Dr. Guze and his colleagues compiled for publication, as well as the corresponding data collection documents used for research and analysis. Especially noteworthy in the Guze Papers are the two oral histories taken with Dr. Guze, as well as his personal diary located in Series 10. This small collection comprises a number of Dr. Berg’s notebooks.  They include his typed and handwritten notes on topics such as anatomy, bacteriology, chemistry, and pharmacology.  Of particular note is the “Guide to the Study of Neurology” (Box 2, Folder 4) which was produced by the WUSM Department of Anatomy, but includes notes and drawings added by Berg.

Collection includes information regarding the Barnes Hospital-Joseph C. Edwards' Fund for the Care of Patients, including copies of Edwards' "The Art of Medicine, Part I: interpersonal relations between patient and doctor, and Part II: interpersonal relations between patient and hospital" (8 leaves) and "The Care of the Patient and the Art of Medicine, Part II: the cost of medical care" (23 leaves). Also included are materials relating to Dr. Edwards' service in World War II in General Hospital 21 and an undated curriculum vitae.

The remaining series include photographs, certificates, films and videotapes, memorabilia, and the many awards Dr. Schwartz received throughout his lifetime.

The material in this collection is primarily related to Robert W. Kelley's military service during World War II with the 21st General Hospital. The largest series is series 1, which includes his military service record, his handwritten patient notes, and Special Court-Martial files against members of 21st General Hospital, as well as reunion lists. Series 2 contains photographs primarily related to the 21st, but also includes a selection of unrelated photographs. Series 3 contains publications including The Quarterly of the Phi Beta Pi Medical Fraternity, The Diplomate, and a Commencement program from Washinton University. Finally, series 4 contains a small amount of general correspondence.

The collection is comprised primarily of correspondence regarding Minnich’s professional associations, though there is some representation of her personal correspondence. Of special note is the correspondence relating to her associations with Indonesian and Turkish laboratory personnel. Also included is material from Minnich’s membership in professional societies including their annual meeting programs and newsletters. The collection also includes parts of Minnich’s research including drafts of research articles, notebooks, photographic prints, contact prints, slides, graphs, and hand drawings of microscopic slides. Some of the documents in this series do not appear to be in alphabetical order, but they have been left in the original files.

Files containing documents and information compiled by and about Drs. Irene E. Karl (1915-2006) and Michael M. Karl (1915-2006). Correspondence, scientific papers and publications, documents concerning the Karl Lectureship, press releases and press coverage of the Karls' careers and achievements. A copy of the 28th ed of Manual of Medical Therapeutics (1995) inscribed and dedicated to Michael Karl (to be retained with collection as an artifact). The files and items were given as one collection, with no overall discernable order.

The Frank O. Richards papers contains statistical and narrative pertaining primarily to Homer G. Phillips Hospital, the St. Louis municipal hospital founded and operated for African Americans in 1937, but also to two other institutions, City Hospital No. 2 and the Peoples’ Hospital, that treated black patients during decades of official racial segregation. Included are files on William H. Sinkler, medical director of Phillips Hospital from 1941 until 1960. The files in Box 1 in particular document the writing of his chapter, “The St. Louis Story,” in A Century of Black Surgeons. Box 2 contains later additions, notably an undergraduate thesis by Dean Lee Kolnick (2003) on Homer G. Phillips Hospital.

They contain information on chest and cancer surgery, other areas of surgical practice, the Washington University Department of Surgery, the university administration, the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and files gathered in tribute to Evarts A. Graham. The material includes correspondence, manuscripts, reports, reprints of articles, and films. The Library’s visual collections include photographs illustrating Burford’s career.
