The collection contains five volumes of reprints, 1921-1963 and 1 manuscript. The manuscript's title is: Diagnosis and managment of severe infections in infants and children: a review of experiences since the introduction of sulfonamide therapy parts I: Sepsis of lateral sinus phlebitis and part II: Hemolytic streptococcal meningitis by Alexis F. Hartmann, M.D., Dorothy Wolff, Ph.D. and Frances Love, M.D. This paper was published in 1942.

Collection includes correspondence with the Washington University School of Medicine Archives staff regarding 21st General Hospital, its history, records, members, and reunions. Also includes unpublished manuscripts about the 21st General Hospital, correspondence between Cady and other members of the unit, and reprints of several journal articles authored by Cady in the 1920s. "A Cady Saga" is a family genealogy completed by Cady in 1983.

Reprints of 44 journal articles authored or co-authored by Gray. Subjects include studies of the thyroid gland, peptic ulcers, pancreatitis, effects on aging, and diastase (amylases).

One bound volume of reprints of 19 scientific articles, 1921-1934, authored or co-authored by Rafael Lorente de Nó.

Two framed original cartoons drawn and lettered by Rafael Lorente de Nó. One is entitled “The Spirit of Nerve.” The second is primarily text which reads, in part: “Beware of the Arquitrabe!”

The Alfred Goldman Papers contain publications, correspondence, manuscripts, lecture outlines, case studies, a notebook, a scrapbook of clippings and letters (microfilm only), a scrapbook of memorial letters, reports and photographs relating to AG’s career and research in diseases of the chest and effects of hyperventilation.

Among the reprints in the collection are pioneer works in hyperventilation, cytology of fluids, and arteriovenous fistula of the lung. Other series pertaining to AG’s published work are correspondence and reports, manuscripts, and scientific photographs. The correspondence in the scrapbooks attests to AG’s warm relationships with friends, colleagues, and patients.

Shortly after acquisition, the Goldman papers were arranged in 6 subgroups and 11 series, inventoried, and then microfilmed. The so-called subgroups constitute an arrangement by format. In the 1970s the Library regularly classed collections of faculty papers in the following pattern: 1, Publications; 2, Bound Papers; 3, Loose Papers; 4, Card files; 5, Photographs; and 6, Memorabilia. Card files happened not to be part of the Goldman papers, thus no subgroup 4 is present. Selected photographs and memorabilia are retained in the papers. All subgroups are now series and series are now subseries. (Other images, notably portraits and group portraits, are presently found in Library visual collections VC 410, 411, and 415.)

The arrangement by format also called for enumerating folders in a fashion that needs explanation –particularly if the microfilm is used. First, the four part folder code number on the right side of the folder tab represents following sequence: collection number/subgroup number/series number/folder number. Second, the folder numbers start over with each new subgroup rather than with each new box. Third, empty cross reference folders were made referring users to material elsewhere in the collection. Later, empty folders were removed creating the gaps in folder numbering.

The Jacob G. Probstein papers include short transcripts of at least two oral history interviews with Probstein on Jewish Hospital (1977), Probstein's short histories of the pancreatitis research group: "Sam Gray/ Michael Somogyi/ May Fund and Pancreatis"(1979), and two letters from Helen Graham about Evarts A. Graham(1965-1968). The Jacob G. Probstein reprints, 1924-1970 are the bulk of the material. The focus of the oral histories are Jewish Hospital of St. Louis, its chiefs of surgery, its patients (the Jewish community), its donors, the role of nurses and nurse administrators, Dr. Michael Somogyi and the pancreatitis and diabetes research group, the clinics, and early operative techniques in the old Delmar location of the hospital.

This collection is comprised mostly of Dr. Cori's personal and professional correspondence, although a few series contain materials relating to his research.

The William H. Olmsted papers include correspondence, manuscripts on diabetes, clippings, and reprints of articles. The materials mainly concern the period 1958-1977. Most of the correspondence is photocopied.

Includes diary, unpublished essay "The Origin and Early Years of the American Board of Pediatrics", scrapbooks and certificates, publications and reprints. It also contains 3 letters by Borden Veeder to Helen W. Doyle, 1917-1919.

Curriculum vitae, 1997, and drafts and supporting materials on two of Mueller's projects on the history of medicine. For the history of McMaster University Medical School there is the draft of Part I. For the writing of Evarts A. Graham, the life, lives, and times of the surgical spirit of St. Louis (Hamilton, ON, 2002), there are interviews, notes, drafts, and other materials compiled. Of special interest are files containing original correspondence from various persons relating their memories of Graham. There is also an oral history of Frank R. Bradley by Peter D. Olch, original materials about Helen T. Graham and about Olch and his father I. Y. Olch.

The Sherwood Moore papers include correspondence, notes, reports, manuscripts, and reprints of articles. They document Dr. Moore’s interests in radiology, cholescystography, hospital administration, and his involvement in the work of Barnes Hospital, Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, St. Louis Maternity Hospital, the School of Medicine administration, and the Department of Radiology.

Much of this collection was assembled by Louise H. Marshall, formerly of Washington University and later of the University of California, Los Angeles. Mrs. Marshall used materials related to Dr. Bishop that she had personally collected, as well as items supplied by her husband, Wade Marshall, and by Dr. Bishop’s brother, Frederick Bishop. All of these materials were placed together with items that had been kept in the Department of Neurology after Dr. Bishop’s death. Included in the collection are correspondence, manuscripts, notes, diagrams, and various ephemera. All photographs and many of the drawings in this collection were separated from the written documents and placed in a visual collection (VC034). The resulting arrangement reflects the mixed provenance and the many hands that have contributed to the collection. It is important to underscore that although Dr. Bishop himself never saw these collections as bibliographic entities, they were assembled in good faith that the effort would help to preserve the memory of this important scientist.

Collection of Gasser's selected reprints, 1914-1927. Many of the scientific articles concern Gasser's work with Joseph Erlanger using a cathode-ray oscillograph to amplify and record electrical conduction, or action potentials, of nerves. Others are concerned with muscular contraction and the study and treatment of shock The collection also includes a bound copy of "Experimental Neurology," (Supplement 1, 1964) which contains Gasser's autobiographical memoir.

The Frank R. Bradley Papers cover the years from 1914 to shortly before his death and consist of nine series. A history of Barnes Hospital by Dr. Bradley is an important series in this collection. He died before completing his final revision of the manuscript. Also of interest is the series on the development and use of the airline-style food services for patients at Barnes Hospital. Dr. Bradley and Henrietta Becker, administrative dietician at Barnes, adapted the hot and cold food cases used to serve airline passengers for use in the hospital. This creative way to keep hot food hot and cold food cold and to control food handling and portion size through greater use of a central food preparation area aroused the interest of hospital administrators and dietitians nationwide. Bradley needed a form letter to reply to all those eager for information about the new-style food service.

This small collection contains letters to Cook from John H. Kennerly, Dean of the WU Dental School; Charles Rice, Secretary, The Jewish Hospital of St. Louis; and Philip A. Shaffer, Dean Washington University Medicine School, concerning Cook's ineligibility to service in the US Army Medical Corps due to the need of the Schools and Hospital to retain him for medical service, 1917. Also included is a handwritten draft of a letter, presumably by Cook, stating he is a conscientious objector and willing only to provide medical care to soliders unable to return to active duty, August 27, 1918. Includes a reprint of the article: Taussig, Albert E., and Jerome E. Cook. 'The Determination of the Diastolic Pressure in Aortic Regurgitation,' reprinted from the Archives of Internal Medicine, May 1913, v.11, p.542-550.

The Frederick J. Taussig Reprints are a collection of 36 scientific articles authored by Fred J. Taussig. The major subjects covered in Dr. Taussig’s articles include abortion and cancer of the vulva, cervix and vagina. Many of the articles contain case studies of patients seen at Barnard Free Skin and Cancer Hospital, St. Louis City Hospital, Washington University Hospital, and Barnes Hospital.

The Park J. White Papers contain correspondence and publications relating to his career in the Department of Pediatrics and his appointments at St. Louis Children's Hospital and Homer G. Phillips Hospital. Also included are his publications on politics, race relations, religion, and health; other scientific manuscripts and literary manuscripts, including works of poetry; and speeches and lecture material related to the course in medical ethics which he taught at the Washington University School of Medicine.

A collection of Howard's selected reprints, 1912-1927, while he was in Chinese institutions.

The majority of this collection is comprised of Dr. Suntzeff’s reprints. Also included in this collection are photographs and various items relating to her personal and professional life. Dr. Suntzeff’s autobiography (Series 4) is a particularly interesting piece that is very telling of her experiences as a female doctor both in Russia and the United States.
