Biographical history

Shirley A. Sahrmann, PT, PhD, FAPTA, is Professor Emerita of Physical Therapy at Washington University School of Medicine. Sahrmann earned her bachelor's degree in physical therapy from Washington University in 1958 and a MA in 1971 and a PhD in neurobiology in 1973. She worked as a physical therapist at Deaconess Hospital and later Washington University, then joined the university faculty in 1961. She became a professor in three departments: physical therapy, cell biology and physiology, and neurology. She was the first director of the Movement Science Program. Sahrmann was the first to propose that there is a human movement system - a physiological system that produces and supports movement of the body. In 2000, she published a seminal textbook on the subject, 'Diagnosis and Treatment of Movement Impairment Syndromes.'
