Biographical history

H. Richard Tyler earned his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Syracuse College in 1947. He spend time after graduation at the Los Alamos National Laboratory with the Atomic Energy Program, then earned his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in 1951. Tyler served as the inaugural Head of the Peter Bent Brigham's Section of Neurology from 1956-1979, then became the first Director of Neurological Services at the new Brigham and Women's Hospital from 1980-1988. He was appointed Professor of Neurology at Harvard in 1974 and Professor Emeritus in 1999. Tyler was a lifelong scholar of medical history and was a founder of the American Academy of Neurology's History Section. His collection of over 7,000 volumes of neurology and neuroscience rare books and monographs was donated to Becker Library in the 1990s.

Scope and content

This collection includes correspondence, illustrations and photographs, materials found in books donated by Dr. Tyler to the Becker Library on topics related to neurology and neurologists, invoices for book purchases, and artifacts. Arranged in five series. Includes CT scans of Phineas Gage's skull. Artifacts include a wax model of a brain and an early electric pseudo-scientific device for brain stimulation.
