Biographical history
Born in Austria, Gisella Loeffler came to the United States with her family in 1908, settling in St. Louis. After studying art at Washington University in St. Louis, she became a prominent member of the St. Louis Art Guild. Plastic Surgeon Vilray P. Blair commissioned Loeffler to decorate his operating room in Barnes Hospital, so that young patients may find it less intimidating.
Scope and content
Dr. Vilray P. Blair's plastic surgery amphitheater in the Rand-Johnson surgical wing at Barnes Hospital was specially decorated by artist Gisella Loeffler.
