Biographical history

Walter Kohnlein was a German prisoner of war held (and presumably a patient) at the 21st General Hospital when the hospital was stationed in North Africa. He was also an artist and made a series of drawings and watercolors which he gave to Benjamin H. Charles, who was the medical officer overseeing P.O.W.s at the 21st General Hospital.

The portrait was drawn by German POW Walter Kohnlein and is signed and dated by the artist.
