Biographical history

Walter Kohnlein was a German prisoner of war held (and presumably a patient) at the 21st General Hospital when the hospital was stationed in North Africa. He was also an artist and made a series of drawings and watercolors which he gave to Benjamin H. Charles, who was the medical officer overseeing P.O.W.s at the 21st General Hospital.

Scope and content

A 'fata morgana' or mirage, envisioned by a prisoner in the German POW section of the 21st General Hospital in Bou Hanifia, Algeria. The watercolor shows the Nissen hut buildings used to house the POWs; the Grand Hotel is in the background. The watercolor was drawn by German POW Walter Kohnlein and is signed, dated, and titled by the artist.
