Biographical history
Walter Kohnlein was a German prisoner of war held (and presumably a patient) at the 21st General Hospital when the hospital was stationed in North Africa. He was also an artist and made a series of drawings and watercolors which he gave to Benjamin H. Charles, who was the medical officer overseeing P.O.W.s at the 21st General Hospital.
Scope and content
Mess line in the German POW section of the 21st General Hospital in Bou Hanifia, Algeria, as seen by prisoner Walter Kohnlein. The German prisoners were housed in Nissen hut buildings within a guarded stockade. The Grand Hotel, in the background, housed the main medical facilities and administrative offices of the 21st General Hospital while the unit was stationed in North Africa. The watercolor was drawn by German POW Walter Kohnlein and is signed and dated by the artist.
