Scope and content
Exterior of the Hotel-Restaurant Ortenberg, with the spire of the Cathedrale of Notre Dame in the background, seen from the Place du Marché aux Cochons de Lait in Strasbourg, France. Located just west of the Rhine in the Alsace province of France, Strasbourg's origins date back to 12 B.C. The city grew out of a Roman military camp and the neighboring fishing and hunting village of 'Strateburgum' (City of Roads), from which the city takes it name. At the end of the French Revolution, during a farewell dinner honoring volunteers in the Rhine army, the first constitutional mayor of Strasbourg asked Rouget de Lisle to compose a song to rally the troops. The results, the Marseillaise, became the French national anthem. Strasbourg was liberated from German occupation on November 23, 1944. Photograph taken in June 1945.
