Scope and content
View of Bou Hanifia, Algeria, 1943. Prominent in the photo are the tower and buildings of the Grand Hotel des Thermes, the hot water spa resort that served as the headquarters for the 21st General Hospital. During its eleven months in North Africa, the 21st General Hospital had many significant achievements. Among the accomplishments of the unit were research work into the care of infectious jaundice patients and the establishment of a venereal disease section, in which the first mass penicillin treatment overseas was effected. The unit also did extensive research in the delayed primary suture of wounds, acrylic skull plates, and early peripheral nerve suture combined with bone shortening operations.
