Biographical history
Elwyn James Anthony was born in Calcutta, India in 1916. He received his medical degree from Kings College in London and served in the Royal Army Medical Corps during and after World War II. After the war, he trained in psychiatry at Maudsley Hospital and served as the research director of child psychiatry at the University of London Institute of Psychiatry. Anthony was recruited to Washington University School of Medicine in 1958 to occupy the world's first endowed chair in child psychiatry, the Blanche F. Littleson Professorship. Anthony wrote 19 books and over 300 articles on child psychiatry; his particular research pursuits were to study the life trajectory of the invulnerable child.
