Biographical history

Paul Berg is an American biochemist and professor emeritus at Stanford University. After completing his PhD in biochemistry at Western Reserve (now Case Western Reserve) University in Cleveland in 1952, he conducted postdoctoral research at the Institute of Cytophysiology in Copenhagen and spent a year conducting further research with Arthur Kornberg at Washington University in St. Louis. He served as an assistant professor of microbiology at Washington University from 1955 until 1959, when he accepted a position at Stanford University. Berg was awarded half of the 1980 Nobel Prize for Chemistry "for his fundamental studies of the biochemistry of nucleic acids, with particular regard to recombinant DNA."
