Biographical history
Barry Commoner received his master's and doctoral degrees from Harvard University. He served as a lieutenant in the Naval Air Force during World War II, then moved to St. Louis where he became a professor of plant physiology at Washington University in St Louis. He served in that role for 34 years, during which time he founded the Center for the Biology of Natural Systems. Commoner became part of the team that conducted the Baby Tooth Survey, which demonstrated the presence of Strontium 90 in baby teeth as a direct result of nuclear fallout. In 1958 Commoner helped to form the Committee for Nuclear Information with the goal of educating the public on the impact of nuclear weapons. This work helped lead to the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty of 1963.
