Harold A. Bulger Photographs and Prints

This collection consists of 176 photographs and prints taken and collected by Harold A. Bulger and relating to the history of medical education in St. Louis. Depicted subjects include Joseph Nash McDowell and Missouri Medical College, St. Louis Medical and Missouri Dental College, Beaumont Hospital Medical College, St. John's Hospital, Washington University Hospital, St. Louis University Medical Department, Marion-Sims College of Medicine, Barnes Medical College, St. Louis College of Physicians and Surgeons, American Medical College, and Homoeopathic Medical College of Missouri. Many of the photographs were taken by Bulger in the 1930s to document the former sites of defunct insitutions. The photographs are often mounted and juxtaposed with prints of drawings or engravings depicting the medical college buildings at their former locations in St. Louis. Some of the prints depict Missouri Medical College (also known as McDowell Medical College) when it was taken over and used as a military prison during the Civil War. Many of the original prints, photographs, and daguerrotypes are housed by the Missouri Historical Society, and copy prints were made for Bulger.

This collection consists of 10 photographs related to Henry Clay Davis, including views of his home, a church, and his gravestone. Also included in this collection is a photograph from the unveiling of a plaque dedicated to the memory of Kate McSorely, who was a nurse to Dr. Davis when he succumbed to Yellow Fever in 1878, and who died shortly after he did.

This collection consists of 85 photographs documenting the personal and professional life of Henry G. Schwartz. Many of the images in the collection are digital surrogates of the the original photographs that primarily depict scenes with Schwartz and other men and women serving as United States Army officers in World War II. Additional digital images depict two young boys playing outside and posing on the steps of a house. The other photographs in the collection are primarily portraits of friends and colleagues of Schwartz, including Carl and Gerty Cori, Joseph Erlanger, Ernest Sachs, Sidney I. Schwab, and Evarts A. Graham. Those photographs (VC102069-084) are also arranged and described as Series 5 in the Henry G. Schwartz Papers (FC112).

Henry Olen Neville Dental Anatomy Kit and Photographs

This collection includes a dental anatomy kit of specimens of human teeth glued to a chart on which they are classified, identified as a project completed by Henry Olen Neville, freshman class, 1904-1905, Dental Department of Washington University (Missouri Dental College).  Also included are 4 mounted photographic prints depicting Neville and classmates and their student lodgings, 1908-1910.

This collection consists of 40 photographs, drawings, and pamphlets from the medical career of Herman Tuholske. Photographs include scenes of Tuholske performing surgery in an operating theater, patient photographs, patient x-rays and an views of an autopsy specimen from a patient who had experienced an extra-uterine pregnancy. The majority of the drawings are pencil diagrams Tuholske created from the autopsy specimen. The German-language pamphlets are titled, "Verein der Meseriker."
