Margaret G. Smith Photographs and Drawings

This collection consists of 155 photographs, drawings, and certificates documenting the personal and professional life of Margaret G. Smith. Photographs depict Smith, her family, and her colleagues at Washington University School of Medicine,  views of Smith's laboratory and mosquito specimens, and microscopic images of various research specimens. The collection also includes sketches and drawings Smith made as she traveled; most of the sketches depict architecture in Bavaria, Germany. Finally, this collection also includes certificates and awards presented to Smith throughout her career, including a sterling silver tray in recognition of her selection by the St. Louis Globe-Democrat as a Woman of Achievement in Science.

This collection consists of 8 photographs and 2 certificates related to Martin Silberberg. Photographs include portraits of Silberberg and the Silberberg family and scenes from the reception for the Martin Silberberg Memorial Fund Exhibit displayed in the Washington University School of Medicine Library. The certificates are the Doctor of Medicine diplomas for Martin Silberberg and his father, Nathan Silberberg, from the University of Breslau in Poland.

This collection consists of 26 glass lantern slides (and 35mm slides) depicting classroom scenes from Washington University School of Medicine in the 1930s. The images were mostly taken in Barnes Hospital ampitheaters.

This collection consists of 50 lithographic prints of historic hearing devices from a scapbook put together by Max A. Goldstein. The hearing devices were collected by Goldstein and installed as an exhibit in the Library for the Central Institute for the Deaf.

This collection consists of 25 photographs, advertisements, and certificates related to hearing devices and to the life of Max A. Goldstein. The photographs primarily depict historic hearing devices in the collection of Max A. Goldstein. See VC703 for the physical devices. Certificates in this collection include a memorial resolution and a birthday certificate from Jewish Hospital of St. Louis, a St. Louis Award certificate, and a Testimonial of Appreciation from The International Congress on the Education of the Deaf. All advertisements in the collection are for hearing devices, primarily those manufactured by F.C. Rein & Son.

This collection consists of 22 photographs, an event program, and 4 color transparencies related to the Max A. Goldstein Rare Book Collection. The photographs depict scenes from the open house and dedication ceremony for the collection held at the Washington University School of Medicine Library Annex in 1977. The program in this collection is for that event. The four color transparencies depict a display of some of the books from the collection taken in the M. Kenton King center in 2003.

McDonnell Medical Sciences Building Photographs

This collection consists of 161 photographs and 1 framed document depicting the groundbreaking ceremony for and construction progress on the McDonnell Medical Sciences Building. The collection also includes a few exterior views of the building and courtyard after its completion. The framed document is an electrocardiogram and impedance pneumogram of astronauts James A. McDivitt and Edward H. White, II, taken during the Gemini IV mission in 1965 and presented to Washingon University School of Medicine at the groundbreaking ceremony in 1967.

This collection consists of 16 reproductions of paintings, engravings, and woodcuts related to medical history, including prints from Andreas Vesalius's "De humani corporis fabrica." The majority of the facsimiles were produced in 1976 by Yale University for a portfolio titled, "Medical History in Pictures Series One: 15th and 16th Century Woodcuts of the Human Body."
