Center for Genetics in Medicine, Washington University School of Medicine

Chancellor Danforth announced a $1.8 million grant to enable scientist at Washington University to establish a new genetics center to complete analysis of the human genome (WU record, December 2, 1987). The grant was from the James S. McDonnell Foundation. Maynard Olson, PH.D. was associate director of the new genetics center and David Schlessing, Ph.D, was director.

Center for Genome Sciences and Systems Biology, Washington University School of Medicine

The Edison Family Center for Genome Sciences & Systems Biology is home to an interdisciplinary, multi-departmental, multi-generational team of investigators from multiple schools who focus on comparative genomics, statistical genomics, and systems biology. The Center strives to catalyze development and application of new analytic methods for studying the major disease franchises embraced by BioMed 21, an interdisciplinary research center at Washington University and the BJC Institute of Health.

The Center sponsors development of key infrastructure elements so as to allow rapid evolution of computational biology at Washington University and serves as a "proving ground" for developing new strategies for educating students and faculty who wish to work at the interface of the biological, physical, computational and engineering sciences.

Center for History of Medicine

The Center for History Of Medicine (CfHOM) at Washington University School of Medicine formally opened on the sixth floor of the Bernard Becker Medical Library on October 27, 2011. Although there has been a long history of interest in medical history at the medical school, no formal entity or program was established prior to the creation of the CfHOM. The Center's mission is to enhance scholarship and learning for and by students and faculty at the School of Medicine across Departments and Schools in the University. Three principal goals are: 1) better education of future generations of physicians, scientists, and scholars 2) historical perspective on the evolution of clinical and basic science knowledge, and 3) highlighting many important groundbreaking discoveries and innovations made at WUSM. The Center was proposed to the Executive Faculty of WUSM on January 13, 2010 and was approved by the Executive Faculty and Dean of the School of Medicine at the following meeting on February 3, 2010.

Central Administration, Washington University School of Medicine

Central Administration includes all the administrative offices and services within the Washington University School of Medicine including the Finance Division, Office of Medical Student Education, Medical Public Affairs, and Office of the Registrar among many others.

Central Institute for the Deaf

The Central Institute for the Deaf was founded by Dr. Max A. Goldstein in 1914 with the mission to teach congenitally deaf children to speak. The first school building was completed in 1916, and was such an immediate success that a second building for housing laboratories, classrooms, and dormitories was completed in 1929.

The Central Institute for the Deaf's Teacher Training College affiliated with Washington University in 1931. Soon after, CID began offering graduate programs in deaf education, communication sciences, and audiology.

In 2003, the Central Institute for the Deaf and Washington University School of Medicine, Department of Otolaryngology formalized ties to create CID at Washington University School of Medicine, though the Central Institute for the Deaf remains separate and financially independent from the university.
