Oliver Abell III received his M.D. from Washington University School of Medicine in 1955. He maintained a private practice at Barnes Hospital from 1961 until his death in 1989.

Dr. Morris Abrams was born in Chicago on January 7, 1913. He received his undergraduate degree in 1934 from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, and his medical degree in 1937 from the University of Illinois School of Medicine in Chicago. Dr. Abrams served his internship at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan and had surgery and urology residencies at Mount Sinai Hospital in Cleveland and at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston.

During World War II, Dr. Abrams served in the U.S. Army as the division surgeon for General George Patton's 4th Armored Division. He retired from the army in 1945 with the rank of lieutenant colonel. After the war, Dr. Abrams worked at Harvard University from 1947 to 1949 before moving to St. Louis in 1950 to serve as the Chief of Urology at the Homer G. Phillips Hospital in north St. Louis. He was also on the staff at Barnes and Jewish Hospitals, and was chief of urology at Jewish from 1954 to 1963, and again from 1982 until he retired in 1987.

Lauren Vedder Ackerman was born in Auburn, New York in 1905. In 1927, he received a bachelor's degree from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. He received his medical degree at the University of Rochester in 1932. In 1942, following residences in California and Massachusetts, he became Chief of Laboratories at Ellis Fischel State Cancer Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. He would become the medical director of that institution.

In 1948, he was appointed professor of pathology at Washington University School of Medicine where he taught for 25 years. He also served as the director of the school's Division of Surgical Pathology and as pathologist-in-chief at Barnes Hospital. Later in his career, he joined the faculty at the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1973.

Dr. Ackerman contributed more than 200 papers and abstracts and wrote several textbooks that are standards in the pathology field. In 1947, he co-authored Cancer: Diagnosis, Treatment and Prognosis. He later wrote Surgical Pathology in 1953 which set the standard for the practice of that specialty. He was credited with establishing surgical pathology as a separate medical specialty that involves the diagnosis of disease based on surgical biopsies. He died in 1993 at the age of 88 in New York.

Gary K. Ackers became the first Raymond H. Wittcoff Professor and head of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at Washington University School of Medicine in 1989. While head of the department, he established a world-renowned group of biophysics-oriented faculty, a Molecular Biophysics program focusing on quantitative measurements of biological processes, and computational modeling of complex behaviors and expanded the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Physics. Bernard C. Adler received both his B.S. and M.D. degrees from Washington University. Adler performed post-graduate work in Otolaryngology at Washington University School of Medicine, and was appointed an instructor in 1956.

Helen M. Aff-Drum earned her bachelor's degree form Washington University and graduated from Washington University School of Medicine in 1934. She completed her residency at St. Louis Children's Hospital and sub-specialized in tuberculosis. She was an associate professor emerita of clinical pediatrics and a clinical professor from 1938-2002.

Harry Agress graduated from Washington University School of Medicine in 1932. He retired from the United States Army as a colonel, having served in the 21st General Hospital in Britain, North Africa, and Italy. Agress was a member of the clinical faculty in Internal Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine, earning emeritus status in 1960.

Robert C. Ahlvin graduated from Washington University School of Medicine in 1954. He was appointed pathologist-in-chief at Jewish Hospital in 1968.
