Miles Clark Whitener graduated from Washington University School of Medicine in 1955. He served in the U.S. Navy as a doctor on an LST in the Pacific. He practiced internal medicine in Overland, MO for over 25 years, then served as Vice President of Medical Affairs of Missouri Baptist Hospital until his retirement.

Whitney, Caroline E.

Caroline Elizabeth Whitney received her A.B. degree from the University of Colorado in 1921. She entered Washington University School of Medicine in 1920 as a second-year student, receiving her degree in 1924. The following year (1924-25) Whitney became the first female intern at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, working in the Obstetrical Service. Whitney then served as an intern at St. Louis Children's Hospital. For the first six months of 1928 she was an instructor in the Department of Anatomy at Washington University School of Medicine. She has been appointed to a yearly position as an instructor in Cytology beginning July 1, 1928. Tragically, however, Caroline Whitney's career was cut short by her death on July 13, 1928 from tuberculosis.

Whittico, James M., Jr.

James M. Whittico, Jr. was the first African-American physician to serve on the St. Louis Board of Health and Hospitals as well as Missouri's first African American to become a military hospital chief surgeon in active combat during World War II. He served as commanding officer and chief surgeon of the 93rd Infantry Division hospital and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He received several military awards, including the Bronze Star and the Meritorious Combat Service Ribbon.

He received his medical degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, and completed a surgical residency at Homer G. Phillips Hospital, followed by a surgical fellowship at Washington University. Dr. Whittico saw patients in his private practice for 65 years, until he retired at age 99. In addition his position at SLU, Dr. Whittico was a clinical instructor of surgery at Washington University School of Medicine and served six St. Louis hospitals as chief of staff or chief of surgery.
