Crawford Sams was a brigadier general, U.S. Army, and research physician, 1902-1994. Sams enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1922, resigning in 1925 to enter medical school. He received his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in 1929 and was then commissioned 1st lieutenant in the Medical Corps. He was promoted to captain (1932), major (1941), lieutenant colonel (February 1942), colonel (August 1942), brigadier general (1948). During the Second World War Sams served in the Middle East, Europe and the Far East. After retiring from the military in 1955, Sams became a research physician with the Operations Research Center at the University of California-Berkeley, and research physician with the Department of Neurology, University of California Medical Center, San Francisco.
