Statistics, 1921-1953.

Series 1 consists of three sub-series, each containing statistics related to different aspects of the hospital’s functioning. Sub-series 1 provides an overview of patients served and outcomes of service; sub-series 2 provides statistics by hospital department; and sub-series 3 provides statistics on patients served by individual physicians.

Events, 1900-1993.

Series 2 contains two sub-series which each include materials related to discrete events in Jewish Hospital’s history. Sub-series 1 contains a list of items found in the 1901 Jewish Hospital building cornerstone, as well as some of, but not all, of the 1901 cornerstone contents. It also contains newspaper clippings related to the 1972 dedication of the Forest Park Pavilion cornerstone. Sub-series 2 documents the 1962 outbreak of infectious hepatitis among Jewish Hospital staff. Outside of the two sub-series, Series 2 also includes event programs for commencements, dances, banquets, balls, and other formal events related to the hospital, its buildings, its school of nursing, and other hospital-related organizations.

Subsidiary Hospital Organizations, 1913-1996.

This series includes eight subseries, with each subseries devoted to a subsidiary organization in Jewish Hospital. Here, a subsidiary organization is one that is mainly or exclusively composed of staff of the Jewish Hospital. These organizations include Board and staff committees and subcommittees, as well as hospital divisions and departments with significant collections of records. Sub-series 1 contains the meeting minutes of the Medical Staff Association for the years 1913-1965 (at the time, the organization was known simply as the Medical Staff). This series also contains the meeting minutes of the Efficiency Committee, composed of both members of the medical staff and the Board, for the years 1916-1922, and of the Medical Staff Council (a committee of the Medical Staff Association). The Medical Staff Council meeting minutes run from 1965-1984, and are interfiled with the Medical Staff minutes for 1960-1965, and with the Medical Staff Association meeting minutes for the years 1966-1984. Sub-series 2 contains correspondence and related materials of the Medical Staff Association for the years 1953-1996. The collection is made up mainly of correspondence and related materials written or received by Dr. Morris Alex. Sub-series 3 contains the meeting minutes for the years 1925-1959 of the Joint Conference Committee (previously the Committee on Conference and Medical Matters). Sub-series 4 contains the correspondence and meeting minutes for the years 1953-1954 of the Medical Advisory Board. Sub-series 5 contains reports, proposals, and correspondence related to the creation, running, and closing of the Division of Child Psychiatry at Jewish Hospital for the years 1955-1963. Sub-series 6 contains the records, including the meeting minutes and correspondence of the Professional Services Committee, and its Medical Component subcommittee, for the years 1956-1963. Sub-series 7 contains the event schedules for the Waldheim Department of Surgery for the years 1980-1992. Events featured on the schedule include conferences, grand rounds, lectures, clinics, and meetings. Sub-series 8 contains the records of the Sidney L. Rothschild Medical Library for the years 1987-1996.

Associated Organizations, 1946-1995.

Series 4 includes three subseries, which each subseries containing materials related to a separate associated or affiliated hospital organization. The organizations are the Medical Staff Alumni Association, Associates in Medicine, and the Jewish Federation. In this context, an associated organization is one which was not exclusively or mainly composed of Jewish Hospital staff members, but which in some way conducted business or maintained relations with the Jewish Hospital.

Scrapbooks, Magazines, and Newspaper Clippings, 1927-1987.

The series contains hospital scrapbooks, copies of hospital scrapbooks, hospital staff scrapbooks, and newspaper clippings related to the hospital. Boxes 32-33 contain hospital scrapbooks for the years 1927-1939, 1938-1958, and 1938-1947, as well as oversized newspaper clippings related to the hospital. Boxes 34-40 hold copies and loose portions of the scrapbooks in Boxes 32-33. Box 41 holds David Gee’s scrapbook, Edward Greensfelder’s scrapbook, and newspaper clippings related to the hospital. Boxes 42-44 hold four binders, the contents of which have been removed and placed in folders, which contain news clippings related to the hospital, and which are organized by topic. The binders cover the years 1986-1987.

Photographs, 1901-1996.

The photographs in this series are divided into five sub-series based on topic depicted, with the oversized photographs housed separately. The sub-series feature photographs of individuals and groups of individuals; official groups; and building interiors and exteriors. Artifacts.

The Jewish Hospital artifacts are varied, but generally include framed or mounted awards and Jewish Hospital souvenirs. For further Jewish Hospital artifacts, please see VC302.

Publications, 1893-1996.

The series contains hospital publications. These publications differ from those in series 12 in that they are designed to provide more in-depth information on various topics. The series is divided into three sub-series by type of publication. The first, containing information related to books published by hospital staff members, as well as copies of books; the second, containing information related to scientific publications (journal articles) published by hospital staff members; and the third, containing serial publications issued by the hospital, or by hospital departments.

Brochures and Other Informational Publications, 1915-1994.

Records included in series 12 are hospital publications of shorter length, which provide more introductory and brief information on their subjects than do the hospital publications in series 9. The items included in the series are split into eleven sub-series by topic covered.  These topics are associated organizations, employee-targeted, financial, hospital departments, histories, hospital overviews, philanthropy, general patient guides, program-specific patient guides, reports to the community, and photographic timelines.

Adminstrative Documents, 1878-1994.

This series contains documents related to the organization, management, and creation of Jewish Hospital. The series is divided in four subseries, with the first sub-series containing significant documents related to the hospital’s founding and evolution up to 1977. The second sub-series contains reports, strategies, and studies related to hospital public relations and marketing. The third sub-series contains regulatory documents for the hospital including by-laws, amendments, and constitutions, and the fourth sub-series contains architectural documents related to the hospital buildings’ growth over the years. The remainder of the series contains President David Gee’s directory; informational documents related to Jewish Hospital’s association with Washington University; reports and correspondence of various committees; and a binder related to Dr. Morton Pareira’s time at Jewish Hospital.

Staff Biographical Files and Lists, 1912-2006.

Series includes staff memorials, C.V.s, obituaries, biographical information, and lists. Larger biographical collections for Samuel Gray, Alexander Earle Horwitz, Hanau and Virgil Loeb, Jesse Myer, Samuel E. Newman, Selig Simon, Samuel D. Soule, Herman Tuholske, and Henry Lincoln Wolfner are included in this series. These larger biographical collections may include more newspaper clippings, longer biographical write-ups, and personal papers. This series includes one sub-series division, with the sub-series containing memorial volumes to significant Jewish Hospital staff members or donors. The remainder of the series includes Jewish Hospital staff C.V.s, biographical files, obituaries, and requests for memorial plaques for deceased staff members, as well as lists of staff members of various departments for various years. The series also includes portions of an exhibit on staff member Carl Heifetz.
