During World War II, Edmund B. Alvis first served as eye surgeon with the E.E. N.T section of the 21st General Hospital, an army unit associated with Barnes Hospital and Washington University. He spent four months under fire on the Anzio beachhead in 1944 performing eye surgeries and other ophthalmological work. Upon his return, the 21st General Hospital was designated an eye center. Throughout the war, he contributed significantly to the advancement of eye surgery in the medical corps through his analysis of cases and descriptions of treatments reported to the surgeon of the AFHQ. For this service, he was awarded the Bronze Star. These patient case notes are restricted. See the archivist for terms of access. (arb@wusm.wustl.edu).
