Mess line in the German POW section of the 21st General Hospital in Bou Hanifia, Algeria, as seen by prisoner Walter Kohnlein. The German prisoners were housed in Nissen hut buildings within a guarded stockade. The Grand Hotel, in the background, housed the main medical facilities and administrative offices of the 21st General Hospital while the unit was stationed in North Africa. The watercolor was drawn by German POW Walter Kohnlein and is signed and dated by the artist.

This group had traveled to Kehl, across the Rhine River from Strasbourg, to 'acquire' furniture for the unit's rest camp ('Chateau Charles') in Strasbourg. From left to right: Richard A. 21st General Hospital personnel making repairs to 'Chateau Charles,' a Strasbourg villa requisitioned for use as a rest camp for the unit's personnel. Repairs to the house included installing a shower, fixing the hot water heater, and installing electrical connections. In addition, the unit built a stone terrace outside the living room and cleared away overgrown shrubs and weeds from the extensive gardens. Photograph taken in June 1945.
