The Frank R. Bradley Papers cover the years from 1914 to shortly before his death and consist of nine series. A history of Barnes Hospital by Dr. Bradley is an important series in this collection. He died before completing his final revision of the manuscript. Also of interest is the series on the development and use of the airline-style food services for patients at Barnes Hospital. Dr. Bradley and Henrietta Becker, administrative dietician at Barnes, adapted the hot and cold food cases used to serve airline passengers for use in the hospital. This creative way to keep hot food hot and cold food cold and to control food handling and portion size through greater use of a central food preparation area aroused the interest of hospital administrators and dietitians nationwide. Bradley needed a form letter to reply to all those eager for information about the new-style food service.

The collection composes of eight series, ranging from 1926 to 1977. It includes student notebooks, patient files, publications, correspondence, and military papers.

Papers include letters concerning Dr. Walton's experiences at General Hospital 21 and other medical units in North Africa during World War II, his notebooks of the years 1923-1925, during which Dr. Walton was a student, and an unpublished paper on Washington University, School of Medicine clinics.

Much of this collection was assembled by Louise H. Marshall, formerly of Washington University and later of the University of California, Los Angeles. Mrs. Marshall used materials related to Dr. Bishop that she had personally collected, as well as items supplied by her husband, Wade Marshall, and by Dr. Bishop’s brother, Frederick Bishop. All of these materials were placed together with items that had been kept in the Department of Neurology after Dr. Bishop’s death. Included in the collection are correspondence, manuscripts, notes, diagrams, and various ephemera. All photographs and many of the drawings in this collection were separated from the written documents and placed in a visual collection (VC034). The resulting arrangement reflects the mixed provenance and the many hands that have contributed to the collection. It is important to underscore that although Dr. Bishop himself never saw these collections as bibliographic entities, they were assembled in good faith that the effort would help to preserve the memory of this important scientist.

This collection contains lectures, memoranda, data, correspondence, notes, clippings, and reprints.

The papers consist of three series: 1. General files, 1952-1973; 2. Letters from J.K. Parnas, 1932-1947; and 3. Reprints, 1911-1945. General Files contain bibliographies of Gerty Cori, letters to Herman Kalckar, and selected transcript including “This I believe, 1952”

This small collection of correspondence has been arranged into one series that is organized alphabetically. All of the correspondence in this collection is from 1927-1930, when Dr. Scott was an assistant to Dr. Cowdry at the Rockefeller Institute of Medical Research and Assistant Professor of Cytology at Washington University. Subjects include yellow fever studies with E.V. Cowdry, papers in publication, Dr. Dean, and the Rockefeller Institute.

The Hallowell Davis papers donated in 1977 are arranged in five series. The first, by far the largest, is made up of general files, concerning all aspects of HD’s research, committee work, and other professional activities. Series 1 contains 13 subseries, representing filing units which were kept more or less “active” for periods up to four academic years each. Each of the subseries contains materials dated both earlier and later than what appears to be the active period. Together the 13 comprise a rough chronological progression tracing HD’s activities from the late 1940s to the late 1960s. Series 2 contains materials in one series relating to HD’s work on aviation medicine for the U.S. National Military Establishment Research and Development Board, 1948-1954. Series 3 contains materials assembled during just after the period when HD served on the Committee on SST-Sonic Boom, 1964-1970. In it there are two subseries, respectively, committee documents and background material. Series 4 contains laboratory notebooks in two subseries. The first of these documents noise experiments measuring cochlear response of various laboratory animals performed under contract with the Office of Naval Research. The second concerns experiments on human cortical evoked potentials (HAVOC experiments). The six narratives of Series 5 are filed in order received by the Library.

A lecture by HD on videotape, ”Sleep in Tuxedo Park,” about a former research associate, Alfred L. Loomis, the American discoverer of human electroencephalography, recorded May 21, 1979, is in the Archives media collection. An oral history interview with Estelle Brodman, Librarian of Washington University School of Medicine Library, recorded April, 1977, is also in the Archives collection.

Butcher's files document his career and those of his colleagues such as Evarts A. Graham, Peter Heinbecker, Carl Moyer and Eugene M. Bricker. Included are correspondence and clippings about the Washington University School of Medicine, its Department of Surgery, and Barnes Hospital, as well as journal reprints and the texts of several lectures delivered by Butcher.

Reprints, abstracts, research notes covering Burch's work in the fields of nutrition and metabolism. Correspondence files are arranged chronologically.

The items in this collection represent different aspects of Dr. Schwartz’s personal and professional life. Series 1 (General Hospital 21) and Series 2 (Consultant in Neurosurgery, Vietnam) contain files relating to Dr. Schwartz’s military service. Another important segment of this collection is comprised of his lecture notes in Series 3. The remaining series include photographs, certificates, films and videotapes, memorabilia, and the many awards Dr. Schwartz received throughout his lifetime.

Files containing documents and information compiled by and about Drs. Irene E. Karl (1915-2006) and Michael M. Karl (1915-2006). Correspondence, scientific papers and publications, documents concerning the Karl Lectureship, press releases and press coverage of the Karls' careers and achievements. A copy of the 28th ed of Manual of Medical Therapeutics (1995) inscribed and dedicated to Michael Karl (to be retained with collection as an artifact). The files and items were given as one collection, with no overall discernable order.

The Jacob G. Probstein papers include short transcripts of at least two oral history interviews with Probstein on Jewish Hospital (1977), Probstein's short histories of the pancreatitis research group: "Sam Gray/ Michael Somogyi/ May Fund and Pancreatis"(1979), and two letters from Helen Graham about Evarts A. Graham(1965-1968). The Jacob G. Probstein reprints, 1924-1970 are the bulk of the material. The focus of the oral histories are Jewish Hospital of St. Louis, its chiefs of surgery, its patients (the Jewish community), its donors, the role of nurses and nurse administrators, Dr. Michael Somogyi and the pancreatitis and diabetes research group, the clinics, and early operative techniques in the old Delmar location of the hospital.

The collection includes correspondence, legal papers, newspaper clippings, and bound short scientific publications documenting Bronfenbrenner’s career. There is also a file of papers relating to the Bronfenbrenner Memorial Award, established after his death.

Correspondence of James Barrett Brown, Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, while chief of plastic surgery at the Valley Forge General Hospital, Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, 1943-1945. Also contains files of photographs of patients illustrating treatments. The collection includes 20 reprints, dating from 1931 to 1942.

This small collection contains letters to Cook from John H. Kennerly, Dean of the WU Dental School; Charles Rice, Secretary, The Jewish Hospital of St. Louis; and Philip A. Shaffer, Dean Washington University Medicine School, concerning Cook's ineligibility to service in the US Army Medical Corps due to the need of the Schools and Hospital to retain him for medical service, 1917. Also included is a handwritten draft of a letter, presumably by Cook, stating he is a conscientious objector and willing only to provide medical care to soliders unable to return to active duty, August 27, 1918. Includes a reprint of the article: Taussig, Albert E., and Jerome E. Cook. 'The Determination of the Diastolic Pressure in Aortic Regurgitation,' reprinted from the Archives of Internal Medicine, May 1913, v.11, p.542-550.

The John D. Vavra Papers are organized into 4 Series: 1. Correspondence to Family Members During Military Service, 1946-1947. 2. Correspondence, 1964-1986. 3. Manuscript for Unpublished, Unfinished Book on Medical Ethics, 1980. 4. Letters to Margaret Wallace (Margaret Vaughn) 1965-1968.

This collection consists of reprints, a bibliography, and biographical information on John T. Hodgen. Also included in the collection are original letters by him, a correspondence file on the Hodgens by descendant Stuart Mudd, reports and exhibits of an ethics case in 1867, and material on the Hodgen lectures, 1922-1982.

Accession 2018-005 is unprocessed and includes a number of items relating to John T. Hodgen including drafts of patient cases and scientific articles for publication, postcards and hotel receipts from travel abroad to Europe (Scotland, Ireland, and France), letters from relatives in Elizabethtown and Hodgenville, Kentucky, as well as letters Hodgen wrote while traveling from Missouri to California on gold mining expedition. Also included as part of this accession is a dozen or more letters written by Colonel John J. Mudd to his mother Eliza Mudd. Colonel Mudd was Dr. Hodgen’s brother in law who died in battle during the civil war. A smaller number of items were included in this accession including John M. Hodgen’s law degree from Washington University (Dr. Hodgen’s son) and his photographs of his family.

The collection consists of eight series. The attempt has been made to maintain the original order as much as possible, and particularly in the correspondence and scientific data series. Much of the material, however, was transmitted and accessioned in small portions in the years 1963-1966, and in some cases items were placed on display in the Library before being arranged in series. The microfilming, moreover, was carried out before the final arrangement and analysis of the collection could be made; somewhat premature filming decisions have, therefore, affected the final arrangement that is presented here and some items are missing or poorly described on the film.

The Ogura papers include five document series including general correspondence, research manuscripts, appointment calendars, medical school notes, and reprints. In terms of subjects, the general correspondence includes Ogura’s editorial work for The Laryngoscope and peer reviews for other journals, as well as professional associations to which Ogura gave much time. Of local interest is material on Barnes Hospital, Jewish Hospital, but mostly on the administration of the department of Otolaryngology in the Washington University School of Medicine.

The research manuscripts and reprints cover his clinical research interests in head and neck surgery, laryngeal physiology and transplantation, and nasopulmonary mechanics. Formats of the paper documents include correspondence, department records, notebooks, manuscripts, and reprints. The reprints are a sampling of his 300 published articles.
