In this oral history, the three physicians discuss their experiences as students at the Washington University School of Medicine in the 1920s; changes in medical practice and education during the 20th century; and changes in the study and practice of obstetrics and gynecology. Arneson, Hobbs, and Roblee also relate stories about Barnes Hospital, St. Louis Maternity Hospital, surgeons Evarts A. Graham and Ernest Sachs, physiologist Joseph Erlanger, and obstetricians Henry Schwarz and Otto Henry Schwarz.

This collection consists of 29 artifacts from the professional life of Franklin E. Walton (1902-1981), including photographs, a drawing, an academic diploma, an academic hood, and an intaglio print of Barnes Hospital by Gustav Goetsch (1907-1994). Primarily, the subjects depicted in the photographs include portraits of Walton and his colleagues at both Barnes Hospital and the 21st General Hospital, as well as several group portraits of the Wasington University School of Medicine (WUSM) class of 1927 at class reunions.

Hildreth discusses the dispute between the Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes Hospital in the early 1960s, and the roles of Edgar M. Queeny (chairman of the Trustees of Barnes Hospital), Edward W. Dempsey (dean of the medical school), consultants Joseph Hinsey and John H. Knowles, and Washington University chancellor George Pake. Hildreth also talks about some of the faculty of the medical school while he was a student in the mid-1920s, such as Evarts A. Graham and Joseph Erlanger.

This collection consists of 119 photographs and certificates from the Harvey R. Butcher collection.

Butcher's files document his career and those of his colleagues such as Evarts A. Graham, Peter Heinbecker, Carl Moyer and Eugene M. Bricker. Included are correspondence and clippings about the Washington University School of Medicine, its Department of Surgery, and Barnes Hospital, as well as journal reprints and the texts of several lectures delivered by Butcher.

This collection consists of 30 composite portraits of Barnes Hospital staff, 1963-1987. Portraits include Private Medical Service House Staff, Ward Medical Service House Staff, Interns, Residents, and General Surgery Staff.

Prospectus and manuscripts for "Time to Heal" and three notebooks compiled by Ludmerer as house officer at Barnes Hospital, June 23 to December 28, 1978 concerning patients in his care (Confidential materials: name of patients may not be duplicated or divulged by users of collection).

This collection includes items related to Barnes Hospital. From the bequest which funded the creation of the hospital; to the hospital’s opening at the end of 1914; and continuing up to and beyond its merger with Jewish Hospital in 1996, the history of Barnes Hospital is documented in a variety of material formats. The collection includes administrative records; staff correspondence; hospital publications; newspaper and magazine clippings; scrapbooks; photographs; VHS tapes; and artifacts. Of note is the collection of hospital publications (series 4), which includes serial magazines and annual reports of the hospital, as well as ephemera such as brochures and flyers. Also noteworthy is the hospital superintendent’s correspondence collection (series 3) covering the years 1913-1926; the hospital’s book of forms from the year of its opening (series 1); a scrapbook containing correspondence of Robert A. Barnes and the original trustees of Barnes Hospital (series 8); and the Hospital's Staff Register covering October 13, 1915 to January 13, 1958 (series 5).

Minutes of meetings form the bulk of the record group. These document decisions on hiring, salaries, tenure, departmental organization, buildings and equipment, affiliated hospitals and clinics, general finance, and other matters of vital importance to the school. During most of its history, the Executive Faculty has met between ten and twenty times a year. Since 1946, agendas of meetings have been preserved along with the minutes.

Hudgens relates some of his experiences as a student at WUSM in the 1950s and some of his influential professors, such as Edward Dempsey, Carl Moore, George Saslow, and Sam Guze. Hudgens also discusses the development of his interest in psychiatry, his medical residencies in Virginia and North Carolina, his experiences as a staff psychiatrist at the U.S. Air Force Hospital at Lackland AFB in Texas, and his experiences on the faculty and in the administration of the Washington University School of Medicine.
