Max A. Goldstein Papers

Series 1 and 2 of the Max A. Goldstein papers include lecture notes and travel diaries, 1892-1894, the manuscript for his The Acoustic Method for the Training of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Child (1939), other manuscripts, reprints of articles, and pamphlets. Series 3 is notes from acoustical instrument catalogs, and Series 5 is a notebook on pathological anatomy and other subjects. Series 4 relates to Dr. Goldstein's purchase of antiquarian books that today form the CID-Max A. Goldstein Collection in Speech and Hearing. Series 6 consists of two letters by Helen Keller. Series 7 is Dr. Goldstein's English language paraphrase of a German article, “Die Sprache des Kindes,” by Ernst Tappolet. Series 8 consists of one letter by C.G. Goodwin. Series 9 contains Dr. Goldstein's monogrammed silk handkerchief.

Katherine Bain Papers

This collection contains the professional and personal papers of Katherine Bain, MD. The records of Dr. Bain’s professional career focus primarily on her work for the Children’s Bureau in the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare and on her work for UNICEF. The records of Dr. Bain’s personal life are equally robust and are reflective of her long life and close relationships with friends and family members.

Records of her professional activities include correspondence, reprints of publications, oral histories, and photographs. Of note are two oral histories focused on Dr. Bain’s career and the history of the Children’s Bureau that were conducted in the 1990s (see Series 4). Also noteworthy are photographs and 35mm slides which capture different periods of Dr. Bain’s career, especially her work with UNICEF (see Series 6). Dr. Bain’s curriculum vitae, lists of her publications, and other biographical materials are included in Series 1.

Records of Dr. Bain’s personal life include correspondence, oral histories, and photographs. Of particular note is an issue of a family newsletter, “The Bain Banner,” published on the occasion of Dr. Bain’s 100th birthday (see Series 1). It contains biographical stories about Dr. Bain and recollections from friends and family. Also of note is an interview with Dr. Bain and her sister, Maria Bain White, conducted by a family member in the 1990s (see Series 4). The photographs and 35mm slides depict the long span of Dr. Bain’s life and include photographs of Dr. Bain as a young child, many of her beloved pet dogs, and her close friend and housemate Christine Glass (see Series 5).

Records of Dr. Bain’s long friendship with Christine Glass are sprinkled throughout the collection. In addition to the photographs and 35mm slides in Series 5, the collection includes correspondence from Ms. Glass (see Series 1), and a photograph of Dr. Bain and Ms. Glass in Italy (see Series 6).

Series 2 includes two publications with illustrations by Louis Cruisius, and Series 3 contains the Antikamnia calendars illustrated by Cruisus.

August Carl Schulenburg Papers

August Carl Schulenburg was a graduate of the Washington University Medical Department in 1906, and he served as an intern at the St. Louis Mullanphy Hospital the following year.  His papers and photographs afford a rare glimpse of medical education in the early 1900s from the perspective of a student and a young physician.  The narrative entitled “Reminiscences of August Carl Schulenburg, 1902-1907” in Series 1 is an especially interesting and informative piece.

Alpha Omega Alpha Fraternity Records

The record group concerns the selection of medical students for the society and the development of the local chapter. The records list many members who became prominent in their fields. The Alpha Omega Alpha fraternity records consist of three volumes, 1905-1957, that include the initial charter and constitution and by-laws, minutes of chapter meetings, treasury records, chapter membership lists, other by-laws, correspondence, and publications. The collection contains three versions of Schlueter’s autobiography, fragmentary incoming correspondence, notes, and drafts. Also included are reprints of Dr. Schlueter’s writings and addresses on medical history and medicine. His autobiography is well-written and revealing of his likes, dislikes, loyalties, the details of his medical practice, travels and post-graduate studies abroad, and his work in various St. Louis hospitals and for Washington University. Also included is the St. Louis Medical Society Library correspondence concerning his estate.

The record group includes minutes of chapter meetings, chapter membership records and catalogs (directories) and bulletins of the national society which include sections on the Pi chapter. For example, the history of the Pi chapter is in the history of the national fraternity: The first half century of Nu Sigma Nu: 1882-1952, Published by the Nu Sigma Nu fraternity, 1953. The chapter membership books are biographical data sheets organized by the date each member was initiated. Membership data can also be found in the minute books.

The St. Louis Society for Internal Medicine records are comprised of mostly organizational records including meeting minutes, agendas, and member rosters. Another significant part of this collection is made up of correspondence, curriculum vitas of members, and the text of lectures given at meetings. Also noteworthy is a typescript volume of early historical sketches, a volume on officers, membership and attendance records, dues and assessments, and legal documents including the articles of agreement and original by-laws.
