This collection contains lectures, memoranda, data, correspondence, notes, clippings, and reprints.

Much of this collection was assembled by Louise H. Marshall, formerly of Washington University and later of the University of California, Los Angeles. Mrs. Marshall used materials related to Dr. Bishop that she had personally collected, as well as items supplied by her husband, Wade Marshall, and by Dr. Bishop’s brother, Frederick Bishop. All of these materials were placed together with items that had been kept in the Department of Neurology after Dr. Bishop’s death. Included in the collection are correspondence, manuscripts, notes, diagrams, and various ephemera. All photographs and many of the drawings in this collection were separated from the written documents and placed in a visual collection (VC034). The resulting arrangement reflects the mixed provenance and the many hands that have contributed to the collection. It is important to underscore that although Dr. Bishop himself never saw these collections as bibliographic entities, they were assembled in good faith that the effort would help to preserve the memory of this important scientist.

Data files, selected short publications, laboratory notebooks and other laboratory records, lantern slides and other photographs on Csapo's research on the progesterone hormone in the physiology of uterine function and uterine muscle contractibility. These files contain data on drug effects of progesterone, estradiol, caffeine, steroids on the ovaries and uterus in humans, rabbits and mice. Later laboratory notebooks are in Series 1, Data, 1946-1979.

The Ogura papers include five document series including general correspondence, research manuscripts, appointment calendars, medical school notes, and reprints. In terms of subjects, the general correspondence includes Ogura’s editorial work for The Laryngoscope and peer reviews for other journals, as well as professional associations to which Ogura gave much time. Of local interest is material on Barnes Hospital, Jewish Hospital, but mostly on the administration of the department of Otolaryngology in the Washington University School of Medicine.

The research manuscripts and reprints cover his clinical research interests in head and neck surgery, laryngeal physiology and transplantation, and nasopulmonary mechanics. Formats of the paper documents include correspondence, department records, notebooks, manuscripts, and reprints. The reprints are a sampling of his 300 published articles.

The Kountz papers are arranged in five short series, including one (Series 5) comprising correspondence received by his wife, Willie Mae Kountz, after his death. In general, the papers reflect to a significant extent Mrs. Kountz’s selections of materials to document her husband’s career. Included are correspondence, press clippings, and publications.

This collection is comprised mostly of Dr. Cori's personal and professional correspondence, although a few series contain materials relating to his research.

The files in this collection have been arranged into three organizational series: professional meetings, personal correspondence, and laboratory notebooks and lectures. The Sonnenwirth Papers are comprised of files that were recovered from his office at the Microbiology Laboratory of Jewish Hospital. The original file order and folder titles have been maintained. Note that Series 1 (Professional Meetings), which relates to Sonnenwirth’s activities in various professional associations, comprises a significant portion of this collection. The approximate dates of the contents are indicated in the container listing, which follows.

The papers consist of three series: 1. General files, 1952-1973; 2. Letters from J.K. Parnas, 1932-1947; and 3. Reprints, 1911-1945. General Files contain bibliographies of Gerty Cori, letters to Herman Kalckar, and selected transcript including “This I believe, 1952”

The Jacob G. Probstein papers include short transcripts of at least two oral history interviews with Probstein on Jewish Hospital (1977), Probstein's short histories of the pancreatitis research group: "Sam Gray/ Michael Somogyi/ May Fund and Pancreatis"(1979), and two letters from Helen Graham about Evarts A. Graham(1965-1968). The Jacob G. Probstein reprints, 1924-1970 are the bulk of the material. The focus of the oral histories are Jewish Hospital of St. Louis, its chiefs of surgery, its patients (the Jewish community), its donors, the role of nurses and nurse administrators, Dr. Michael Somogyi and the pancreatitis and diabetes research group, the clinics, and early operative techniques in the old Delmar location of the hospital.

Collection of Gasser's selected reprints, 1914-1927. Many of the scientific articles concern Gasser's work with Joseph Erlanger using a cathode-ray oscillograph to amplify and record electrical conduction, or action potentials, of nerves. Others are concerned with muscular contraction and the study and treatment of shock The collection also includes a bound copy of "Experimental Neurology," (Supplement 1, 1964) which contains Gasser's autobiographical memoir.

The Samuel B. Guze Papers are arranged in eleven organizational series. The bulk of this large collection is contained in Series 3 (General Files) and Series 5 (Manuscripts). Included in the Guze Papers are letters, journal articles, and handwritten notes. However, a significant portion of the collection consists of drafts of articles that Dr. Guze and his colleagues compiled for publication, as well as the corresponding data collection documents used for research and analysis. Especially noteworthy in the Guze Papers are the two oral histories taken with Dr. Guze, as well as his personal diary located in Series 10. Prospectus and manuscripts for "Time to Heal" and three notebooks compiled by Ludmerer as house officer at Barnes Hospital, June 23 to December 28, 1978 concerning patients in his care (Confidential materials: name of patients may not be duplicated or divulged by users of collection).

The collection contains five volumes of reprints, 1921-1963 and 1 manuscript. The manuscript's title is: Diagnosis and managment of severe infections in infants and children: a review of experiences since the introduction of sulfonamide therapy parts I: Sepsis of lateral sinus phlebitis and part II: Hemolytic streptococcal meningitis by Alexis F. Hartmann, M.D., Dorothy Wolff, Ph.D. and Frances Love, M.D. This paper was published in 1942.

The collection is composed of selected reprints of Marriott’s published works, covering thirteen studies and articles on infant care and nutrition, medical curriculum, and biochemistry.

Reprints of 77 scientific articles authored or co-authored by Robert A. Moore, 1927-1940, mostly prior to his joining the faculty at Washington University. During this period, his research was on the number of glomeruli in the normal and pathological kidney and the morphology of the prostate gland. Autopsy and hospital pathology studies are also found.

Four bound volumes of Philip Needleman's scientific reprints, 1961-1986. Topics include the following: arachidonic acid metabolism in normal and pathological states, atrial peptides, organic nitrates and angiotensin antagonists. Philip Needleman's curriculum vitae is in the first volume (I, II)

The Eli Robins papers are arranged in twenty-seven organizational series on the administration of the Psychiatry Department from 1962-1975 and the research of the Eli Robins labs.  The bulk of the collection is in the General Correspondence files (Series 4), General files (Series 5), Associations and Societies (Series 6), and Laboratory Notebooks and Records (Series 19).  Included in the Robins papers are letters, a complete set of Journal articles (Series 1), and handwritten notes. In addition, there are drafts of articles that Dr. Robins and members of his lab compiled for publication and corresponding data collection documents used for research and analysis.

The collection contains Ruth Silberberg’s records of her collaborative research with her husband, Martin Silberberg, on skeletal aging and growth, and the study of osteoarthritis. It also contains Ruth Silberberg’s work on the relation of diabetes and joint disease after Martin’s death in 1966. The two series include reprints of scientific articles authored or co-authored by Ruth Silberberg, 1961-1976, and her photomicrographs, 1959-[1975]. After the Silberbergs received training in electron microscopy in 1959, the electron micrographs became an important tool in Ruth and Martin’s joint research and important illustrations for their publications of the period.

Reprints of 41 scientific articles and 2 case reports authored or co-authored by Ernest Sachs. Subjects include neurosurgery, neuropathology, and neuroanatomy. Also includes three medical artifacts or instrument: .Hemocyctometer case with two glass pipettes for measuring white and red blood cells.
