The papers document Cordonnier’s research in urology, his teaching and membership in the Clinical Society of Genito-urinary Surgeons. They include correspondence and reprints of articles. Selected photographs and certificates of Cordonnier are located in the visual collections of the Becker Library.

Correspondence of James Barrett Brown, Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, while chief of plastic surgery at the Valley Forge General Hospital, Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, 1943-1945. Also contains files of photographs of patients illustrating treatments. The collection includes 20 reprints, dating from 1931 to 1942.

This collection contains mostly correspondence and other materials related to Moore’s involvement with various committees and professional societies.  In particular, this collection highlights Moore’s work on anemia, iron deficiency, and nutrition.

The Hallowell Davis papers donated in 1977 are arranged in five series. The first, by far the largest, is made up of general files, concerning all aspects of HD’s research, committee work, and other professional activities. Series 1 contains 13 subseries, representing filing units which were kept more or less “active” for periods up to four academic years each. Each of the subseries contains materials dated both earlier and later than what appears to be the active period. Together the 13 comprise a rough chronological progression tracing HD’s activities from the late 1940s to the late 1960s. Series 2 contains materials in one series relating to HD’s work on aviation medicine for the U.S. National Military Establishment Research and Development Board, 1948-1954. Series 3 contains materials assembled during just after the period when HD served on the Committee on SST-Sonic Boom, 1964-1970. In it there are two subseries, respectively, committee documents and background material. Series 4 contains laboratory notebooks in two subseries. The first of these documents noise experiments measuring cochlear response of various laboratory animals performed under contract with the Office of Naval Research. The second concerns experiments on human cortical evoked potentials (HAVOC experiments). The six narratives of Series 5 are filed in order received by the Library.

A lecture by HD on videotape, ”Sleep in Tuxedo Park,” about a former research associate, Alfred L. Loomis, the American discoverer of human electroencephalography, recorded May 21, 1979, is in the Archives media collection. An oral history interview with Estelle Brodman, Librarian of Washington University School of Medicine Library, recorded April, 1977, is also in the Archives collection.

Correspondence, speeches, lectures, notebooks, certificates, reprints, clippings and photos relating to radiology, neoplasms, cholecystography, kymography, mammography and hospital administration. Includes material on various national and international organizations with which Dr. Scott was associated.

The Ogura papers include five document series including general correspondence, research manuscripts, appointment calendars, medical school notes, and reprints. In terms of subjects, the general correspondence includes Ogura’s editorial work for The Laryngoscope and peer reviews for other journals, as well as professional associations to which Ogura gave much time. Of local interest is material on Barnes Hospital, Jewish Hospital, but mostly on the administration of the department of Otolaryngology in the Washington University School of Medicine.

The research manuscripts and reprints cover his clinical research interests in head and neck surgery, laryngeal physiology and transplantation, and nasopulmonary mechanics. Formats of the paper documents include correspondence, department records, notebooks, manuscripts, and reprints. The reprints are a sampling of his 300 published articles.

The Burford papers consist of six series. They contain information on chest and cancer surgery, other areas of surgical practice, the Washington University Department of Surgery, the university administration, the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and files gathered in tribute to Evarts A. Graham. The material includes correspondence, manuscripts, reports, reprints of articles, and films. The Library’s visual collections include photographs illustrating Burford’s career.

Files containing documents and information compiled by and about Drs. Irene E. Karl (1915-2006) and Michael M. Karl (1915-2006). Correspondence, scientific papers and publications, documents concerning the Karl Lectureship, press releases and press coverage of the Karls' careers and achievements. A copy of the 28th ed of Manual of Medical Therapeutics (1995) inscribed and dedicated to Michael Karl (to be retained with collection as an artifact). The files and items were given as one collection, with no overall discernable order.

The Frank O. Richards papers contains statistical and narrative pertaining primarily to Homer G. Phillips Hospital, the St. Louis municipal hospital founded and operated for African Americans in 1937, but also to two other institutions, City Hospital No. 2 and the Peoples’ Hospital, that treated black patients during decades of official racial segregation. Included are files on William H. Sinkler, medical director of Phillips Hospital from 1941 until 1960. The files in Box 1 in particular document the writing of his chapter, “The St. Louis Story,” in A Century of Black Surgeons. Box 2 contains later additions, notably an undergraduate thesis by Dean Lee Kolnick (2003) on Homer G. Phillips Hospital.

The collection is comprised primarily of correspondence regarding Minnich’s professional associations, though there is some representation of her personal correspondence. Of special note is the correspondence relating to her associations with Indonesian and Turkish laboratory personnel. Also included is material from Minnich’s membership in professional societies including their annual meeting programs and newsletters. The collection also includes parts of Minnich’s research including drafts of research articles, notebooks, photographic prints, contact prints, slides, graphs, and hand drawings of microscopic slides. Some of the documents in this series do not appear to be in alphabetical order, but they have been left in the original files.

Early records on research include correspondence and laboratory and specimen notebooks, ca. 1955-1975. Later papers consist of correspondence, photos, NIH and tobacco grants, patents, lecture slides, reprints (including correspondence), newspaper articles, files on meetings, appointment calendars, reprints, and books.

The personal and professional papers of David Goldring contain two series.  The subject of Series 2 is the history of pediatric cardiology at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Washington University in St. Louis. Series 1 is a subject file on the professional activities and research interests of David Goldring M.D. Contains: reprints, notes, letters, manuscripts, and various articles.

This collection includes 4 series.  Much of the documention included in each of the series details how to operate various medical equipment.  Note that Series 1: Correspondence; Series 2, Micromanipulator; and Series 3: Knife Sharpener and Stropper are available on microfilm only.  Series 4, the scrapbook is available in both microfilm and hardcopy format.

The 21st General Hospital Records is a collection of manuscripts and war memorabilia brought together and preserved by veterans of a military unit. Several of the series were generated as official records of the 21st General Hospital when it was stationed overseas, 1942-1945. But also included are many files and writings compiled or composed by the principal donor, Lee D. Cady, M.D. as late as 1975. The collection is designated a record group because it documents the history of an organization, rather than the career of any particular individual and because this organization at its inception was sponsored by Washington University School of Medicine.

The record group, as processed and described in this inventory by the Archives staff, is comprised of seventeen series. The series include narrative histories and reports, unit newspapers, records of the unit before activation, training materials, transit orders and rosters, files pertaining to each of the overseas duty stations, personnel files, general subject files, maps and plans, and select publications concerning the war and locales where the unit served.

This small collection is primarily focused on Dr. Kerr's military service during WWII.

The items in this collection represent different aspects of Dr. Schwartz’s personal and professional life. Series 1 (General Hospital 21) and Series 2 (Consultant in Neurosurgery, Vietnam) contain files relating to Dr. Schwartz’s military service. Another important segment of this collection is comprised of his lecture notes in Series 3. The remaining series include photographs, certificates, films and videotapes, memorabilia, and the many awards Dr. Schwartz received throughout his lifetime.

The Robert E. Shank papers include correspondence, reports, documents, architectural plans, manuscripts, speeches, and conference proceedings. The files document his interests in nutrition, diet, rehabilitation, and hospital administration. Also notable among them are information on his direction of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health and its programs. RES played a leading role in the construction of two Medical Center buildings, the Irene Walter Johnson Institute of Rehabilitation and the David P. Wohl, Jr. Memorial Clinics and in the development of the services housed there. RES’s papers also contain files on his work with the Office of the Surgeon General of the Army and government-sponsored nutrition programs in Latin America.

The John D. Vavra Papers are organized into 4 Series: 1. Correspondence to Family Members During Military Service, 1946-1947. 2. Correspondence, 1964-1986. 3. Manuscript for Unpublished, Unfinished Book on Medical Ethics, 1980. 4. Letters to Margaret Wallace (Margaret Vaughn) 1965-1968.

The Samuel B. Guze Papers are arranged in eleven organizational series. The bulk of this large collection is contained in Series 3 (General Files) and Series 5 (Manuscripts). Included in the Guze Papers are letters, journal articles, and handwritten notes. However, a significant portion of the collection consists of drafts of articles that Dr. Guze and his colleagues compiled for publication, as well as the corresponding data collection documents used for research and analysis. Especially noteworthy in the Guze Papers are the two oral histories taken with Dr. Guze, as well as his personal diary located in Series 10. The Eli Robins papers are arranged in twenty-seven organizational series on the administration of the Psychiatry Department from 1962-1975 and the research of the Eli Robins labs.  The bulk of the collection is in the General Correspondence files (Series 4), General files (Series 5), Associations and Societies (Series 6), and Laboratory Notebooks and Records (Series 19).  Included in the Robins papers are letters, a complete set of Journal articles (Series 1), and handwritten notes. In addition, there are drafts of articles that Dr. Robins and members of his lab compiled for publication and corresponding data collection documents used for research and analysis.
