The Robert E. Shank papers include correspondence, reports, documents, architectural plans, manuscripts, speeches, and conference proceedings. The files document his interests in nutrition, diet, rehabilitation, and hospital administration. Also notable among them are information on his direction of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health and its programs. RES played a leading role in the construction of two Medical Center buildings, the Irene Walter Johnson Institute of Rehabilitation and the David P. Wohl, Jr. Memorial Clinics and in the development of the services housed there. RES’s papers also contain files on his work with the Office of the Surgeon General of the Army and government-sponsored nutrition programs in Latin America.

Drews, Whitener and Geise reflect back on their experiences as students at the Washington University School of Medicine in the 1950s and the value of rotating rather than specialized internships. The three physicians discuss some of the memorable faculty members, such as Mildred Trotter, Carl Moyer, Oliver Lowry, and Carl Moore. They also discuss technological and pharmacological changes over the years that have affected the practice of medicine.

Reprints of 77 scientific articles authored or co-authored by Robert A. Moore, 1927-1940, mostly prior to his joining the faculty at Washington University. During this period, his research was on the number of glomeruli in the normal and pathological kidney and the morphology of the prostate gland. Autopsy and hospital pathology studies are also found.

This small collection includes a presentation Dr. Hudgens gave during the Psychiatry Department grand rounds on October 24, 2000, titled "On the shoulders of giants, a tribute to Samuel B. Guze". An additional accession includes various items related to the School of Medicine student musical "New Facies of 1955" that was organized by the WUSM Class of 1956. Items include three 33 1/3 vinyl records recorded on April 16, 1955, a photograph of Dr. Hudgens singing during the musical, and song lyrics that have been edited by Dr. Hudgens. This collection also includes a brief typed description of Dr. Hudgens experience as a medical student at WUSM (1952-1956) written by Dr. Hudgens.

This collection contains records relating to Bunge’s work as a neurobiologist. Records include research notes and data; electron microscopy prints; manuscript drafts, related correspondence, and figures prepared for publication and presentation; photographs and transparencies; a program grant application; and correspondence.

Two framed original cartoons drawn and lettered by Rafael Lorente de Nó. One is entitled “The Spirit of Nerve.” The second is primarily text which reads, in part: “Beware of the Arquitrabe!”

Four bound volumes of Philip Needleman's scientific reprints, 1961-1986. Topics include the following: arachidonic acid metabolism in normal and pathological states, atrial peptides, organic nitrates and angiotensin antagonists. Philip Needleman's curriculum vitae is in the first volume (I, II)

The Shaffer papers include ten document series including correspondence, diaries, scrapbooks, short publications, notes, and his Ph.D. dissertation. Major subjects are his research work in biochemistry and the administration of WUSM as dean and head of the Department of Biological Chemistry. His work with Barnes Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, American Society of Biological Chemists and the U. S. Army in World War I are also subjects.

In 2006, this collection contained many deteriorated brittle carbon copies on newsprint and newspaper clippings that chipped or fractured with minimal handling. The acidic newsprint had stained surrounding documents and was losing contrast due to browning. Archives staff made acid-free photocopies to preserve content and contrast for future use and preservation microfilming.

Early records on research include correspondence and laboratory and specimen notebooks, ca. 1955-1975. Later papers consist of correspondence, photos, NIH and tobacco grants, patents, lecture slides, reprints (including correspondence), newspaper articles, files on meetings, appointment calendars, reprints, and books.

The Park J. White Papers contain correspondence and publications relating to his career in the Department of Pediatrics and his appointments at St. Louis Children's Hospital and Homer G. Phillips Hospital. Also included are his publications on politics, race relations, religion, and health; other scientific manuscripts and literary manuscripts, including works of poetry; and speeches and lecture material related to the course in medical ethics which he taught at the Washington University School of Medicine.

The Palmer H. Futcher note file on Internal Medicine Department presentations, was started by Dr. Futcher during his tenure as assistant professor of medicine, 1946-1948.  The card file consists of 4 x 6 inch cards, arranged in two parts, (1) names of presenters, and (2) subjects of their presentations.  Futcher’s actual lecture notes are filed in the subject file, with the presenter file serving as an index. Presenters include W. Barry Wood, Carl V. Moore, Edward Reinhard, etc., with guests from other departments, including Carl F. Cori and Robert A. Moore. Notes from presentations in the 1960-1980s are also in the subject file, although most are from 1946-1948.

Lowry discusses the life and work of Helen Tredway Graham, a member of the department of pharmacology of the Washington University School of Medicine from 1925-1971. Lowry discusses their work together studying histamines.
