Five short publications and one unpublished typescript documenting the career and interests of Andrew B. Jones, Professor of Neurology, 1935-1958 and n.d. Several publications are on outbreaks of St. Louis encephalitis in the 1930s.

In his oral history interview, Jones discusses some of his experiences as a medical officer during World War I. He also recalls some of the changes he witnessed over the years in the field of neurology and at the Washington University School of Medicine. Jones recalls some of his colleagues, such as Vilray P. Blair, George Dock, Ernest Sachs, and Sidney Schwab.

The Shaffer papers include ten document series including correspondence, diaries, scrapbooks, short publications, notes, and his Ph.D. dissertation. Major subjects are his research work in biochemistry and the administration of WUSM as dean and head of the Department of Biological Chemistry. His work with Barnes Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, American Society of Biological Chemists and the U. S. Army in World War I are also subjects.

In 2006, this collection contained many deteriorated brittle carbon copies on newsprint and newspaper clippings that chipped or fractured with minimal handling. The acidic newsprint had stained surrounding documents and was losing contrast due to browning. Archives staff made acid-free photocopies to preserve content and contrast for future use and preservation microfilming.

Manuscripts, 1912-1940 and two volumes of reprints labelled: "Contributions to the dental literature, 1906-1928, and "Addresses, reprints," 1933-1957. The addresses include manuscripts as well as reprints. Subjects include dental education in general, and orthodontics. A few of the manuscripts concern the Washington University School of Dentistry, its history and the Department of Orthodontics.

The original inventory of the Graham Papers was compiled before the collection was donated to the Washington University School of Medicine Library.  Unfortunately, some items were removed from Dr. Graham’s files before the collection was donated.  Therefore, the inventory that was provided along with the collection included citations to many items, particularly scientific reprints, which had in fact been removed from the files before the collection was donated to the Archives.

The decision was made by the library staff to continue using the original inventory in order to show the collection in its entirety.  The inventory has been revised to include the following changes: (1) empty folders are marked as such by brackets or by an asterisk (*) to indicate items removed; (2) the collection has been microfilmed, and notations concerning the reels may be found within the inventory; (3) the collection has been placed in document boxes and notations concerning the boxes have been added to the inventory.

The files are divided into sixteen series, which are listed below. The series designations together with the folder titles provide basic descriptions of the contents.  Particular note, however, should be made of series 11, which contains correspondence files of Dr. Fred Murphy, Graham’s predecessor as Chairman of the Department of Surgery.

The Vilray Blair Papers comprise 10 series that include office files, publications by Blair and other authors, and military memorabilia. The publications document Blair’s interest and achievements in plastic and oral surgery, especially his success in treating harelip and cleft palate, skin grafting, and reconstructive facial surgery. His correspondence and professional association memorabilia illuminate his extensive involvement as a recognized leader in the medical community, and his military memorabilia details his time as a plastic surgeon in the U.S. Army.

Reprints of 44 journal articles authored or co-authored by Gray. Subjects include studies of the thyroid gland, peptic ulcers, pancreatitis, effects on aging, and diastase (amylases).

The Sherwood Moore papers include correspondence, notes, reports, manuscripts, and reprints of articles. They document Dr. Moore’s interests in radiology, cholescystography, hospital administration, and his involvement in the work of Barnes Hospital, Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, St. Louis Maternity Hospital, the School of Medicine administration, and the Department of Radiology.

The M. G. Seelig Reprints is a collection of 92 scientific articles authored or co-authored by M. G. Seelig that have been bound in two separate volumes. Volume 1 (1904-1922) is titled “Seelig Reprints.” Volume 2 (1904-1947) is titled “Collected Papers of M. G. Seelig, M.D.” Subjects include shock, clinical surgery, cancer, surgical pathology, and medical history.

Correspondence of James Barrett Brown, Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, while chief of plastic surgery at the Valley Forge General Hospital, Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, 1943-1945. Also contains files of photographs of patients illustrating treatments. The collection includes 20 reprints, dating from 1931 to 1942.

The Frederick J. Taussig Reprints are a collection of 36 scientific articles authored by Fred J. Taussig. The major subjects covered in Dr. Taussig’s articles include abortion and cancer of the vulva, cervix and vagina. Many of the articles contain case studies of patients seen at Barnard Free Skin and Cancer Hospital, St. Louis City Hospital, Washington University Hospital, and Barnes Hospital.

Reprints of 77 scientific articles authored or co-authored by Robert A. Moore, 1927-1940, mostly prior to his joining the faculty at Washington University. During this period, his research was on the number of glomeruli in the normal and pathological kidney and the morphology of the prostate gland. Autopsy and hospital pathology studies are also found.

Forty short publications on fossil flora, bacteriology, surgery and medicine by Walter C.G. Kirchner and a few short publications by Arthur Hollick, Elizabeth Britten, and others. The subjects of the medical and surgical reprints include heart and spleen surgery and the treatment of fractured skull and spine, hernia, bowel obstruction, aneurisms, ascites, and wounds to the diaphragm, heart, chest, and abdomen. A table of contents and index for the publications are bound into the volume. A short letter from D.S. Brown of Brownhurst to Walter C. G. Kirchner, 1898, is bound after fossil plant reprints as item 1d. Of special interest is the annual report of the city hospital (1907-08) and Clinic at City Hospital (1906) where Kirchner was superintendent from 1907-1910. Also of interest is "The Bacterial Examination of River Water." (1905), based on work done when he was assistant bacteriologist in the Health department of St. Louis, 1899-1901.

This small collection includes a few of Dr. Tuholske's reprints as well as other articles written about him. Reprints, addresses, and manuscript papers associated with surgical pathology, the lives of Tuholske and his colleagues, and Missouri Medical College. Many manuscripts are on the letterhead of the Surgical and Gynecological Hospital where Tuholske was affiliated.

The collection is composed of selected reprints of Marriott’s published works, covering thirteen studies and articles on infant care and nutrition, medical curriculum, and biochemistry.

Reprints of 41 scientific articles and 2 case reports authored or co-authored by Ernest Sachs. Subjects include neurosurgery, neuropathology, and neuroanatomy. Also includes three medical artifacts or instrument: .Hemocyctometer case with two glass pipettes for measuring white and red blood cells. Label on case reads “Blutkorperzahlapparat nach Thoma.” Manufactured by C. Zeiss, Jena; Wooden case containing 5 bone chisels manufactured by Louis & H. Loewenstei, Berlin; .

This small collection contains letters to Cook from John H. Kennerly, Dean of the WU Dental School; Charles Rice, Secretary, The Jewish Hospital of St. Louis; and Philip A. Shaffer, Dean Washington University Medicine School, concerning Cook's ineligibility to service in the US Army Medical Corps due to the need of the Schools and Hospital to retain him for medical service, 1917. Also included is a handwritten draft of a letter, presumably by Cook, stating he is a conscientious objector and willing only to provide medical care to soliders unable to return to active duty, August 27, 1918. Includes a reprint of the article: Taussig, Albert E., and Jerome E. Cook. 'The Determination of the Diastolic Pressure in Aortic Regurgitation,' reprinted from the Archives of Internal Medicine, May 1913, v.11, p.542-550.

Reprints of 33 scientific articles authored or co-authored by G. Canby Robinson, in a bound volume titled "Reprints, Robinson 1: 1902-1918 W 7 R661r 1902-1918." Subjects include primarily the diseases of the heart, but also electrocardiography, typhoid bacilli and the treatment of tetanus by magnesium sulphate.

Summary: Collection includes a manuscript on astigmatism, a book of patient records, and a selection of publications on various ophthalmological problems and hospital administration.
