In this oral history, the three physicians discuss their experiences as students at the Washington University School of Medicine in the 1920s; changes in medical practice and education during the 20th century; and changes in the study and practice of obstetrics and gynecology. Arneson, Hobbs, and Roblee also relate stories about Barnes Hospital, St. Louis Maternity Hospital, surgeons Evarts A. Graham and Ernest Sachs, physiologist Joseph Erlanger, and obstetricians Henry Schwarz and Otto Henry Schwarz.

Boyd recounts some of his experiences as a student at the Washington University School of Medicine in the 1920s and his recollections of instructors such as Barney Brooks and David Barr. Also covered are some of Boyd’s experiences as a general practitioner in Houston, Texas, especially during the Depression. Interviewed by Darryl Podoll on May 13, 1976. OH023. The collection contains Ruth Silberberg’s records of her collaborative research with her husband, Martin Silberberg, on skeletal aging and growth, and the study of osteoarthritis. It also contains Ruth Silberberg’s work on the relation of diabetes and joint disease after Martin’s death in 1966. The two series include reprints of scientific articles authored or co-authored by Ruth Silberberg, 1961-1976, and her photomicrographs, 1959-[1975]. After the Silberbergs received training in electron microscopy in 1959, the electron micrographs became an important tool in Ruth and Martin’s joint research and important illustrations for their publications of the period.

Stewart briefly discusses her experiences in medical school at the Washington University School of Medicine, her remembrances of professor Ernest Sachs, and her internship at St. Louis Maternity Hospital. Stewart recounts the beginning of the first contraceptive clinic in St. Louis, the Maternal Health Association of Missouri (later Planned Parenthood of St. Louis), and some of its founders, Frederick J. Taussig, Robert J. Crossen, and Helen Buss. She also recalls her work at the clinic and its development over the years. The interview concluded with a discussion about problems with medical malpractice insurance and the rising cost of medical care.

Much of this collection was assembled by Louise H. Marshall, formerly of Washington University and later of the University of California, Los Angeles. Mrs. Marshall used materials related to Dr. Bishop that she had personally collected, as well as items supplied by her husband, Wade Marshall, and by Dr. Bishop’s brother, Frederick Bishop. All of these materials were placed together with items that had been kept in the Department of Neurology after Dr. Bishop’s death. Included in the collection are correspondence, manuscripts, notes, diagrams, and various ephemera. All photographs and many of the drawings in this collection were separated from the written documents and placed in a visual collection (VC034). The resulting arrangement reflects the mixed provenance and the many hands that have contributed to the collection. It is important to underscore that although Dr. Bishop himself never saw these collections as bibliographic entities, they were assembled in good faith that the effort would help to preserve the memory of this important scientist.

This collection consists of 629 photographs, negatives, and glass lantern slides chronicling the life and career of E.V. Cowdry. The majority of the photographs are scenes from Cowdry's professional travels in China, India, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Tunisia, and South Africa. The glass lantern slides specifically depict scenes from Cowdry's travels in China.

The Kountz papers are arranged in five short series, including one (Series 5) comprising correspondence received by his wife, Willie Mae Kountz, after his death. In general, the papers reflect to a significant extent Mrs. Kountz’s selections of materials to document her husband’s career. Included are correspondence, press clippings, and publications.

The Jacob G. Probstein papers include short transcripts of at least two oral history interviews with Probstein on Jewish Hospital (1977), Probstein's short histories of the pancreatitis research group: "Sam Gray/ Michael Somogyi/ May Fund and Pancreatis"(1979), and two letters from Helen Graham about Evarts A. Graham(1965-1968). The Jacob G. Probstein reprints, 1924-1970 are the bulk of the material. The focus of the oral histories are Jewish Hospital of St. Louis, its chiefs of surgery, its patients (the Jewish community), its donors, the role of nurses and nurse administrators, Dr. Michael Somogyi and the pancreatitis and diabetes research group, the clinics, and early operative techniques in the old Delmar location of the hospital.

This collection consists of 24 photographs primarily depicting scenes from the dedication of the Barnes Hospital West Pavilion on December 12, 1979. The collection also includes an architectural rendering of the pavilion prior to its construction.

The Park J. White Papers contain correspondence and publications relating to his career in the Department of Pediatrics and his appointments at St. Louis Children's Hospital and Homer G. Phillips Hospital. Also included are his publications on politics, race relations, religion, and health; other scientific manuscripts and literary manuscripts, including works of poetry; and speeches and lecture material related to the course in medical ethics which he taught at the Washington University School of Medicine.

This collection consists of 32 certificates and plaques from the professional life of Justin J. Cordionner, including diplomas, awards, membership certificates, and Board certifications.

Carroll recounts his service in the Army Medical Corps from 1916 to 1946: service in France during World War I; postings to the Philippines, China, Jefferson Barracks; medical service with the Civilian Conservation Corps during the early years of the Depression; medical service in the South Pacific during World War II; contacts with Douglas McArthur. Also covered are Carroll’s post-war experiences as dean of the Creighton University School of Medicine.

Agress discusses his medical studies at Washington University School of Medicine (St. Louis, Mo.) and the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis, Minn.); his service in World War II with the U.S. Army, 21st General Hospital, in Algeria, Italy, and France; and his civilian practice in St. Louis as a physician and pathologist. He speaks about some of his professors and colleagues, including Evarts A. Graham, Ernest Sachs, and Lee D. Cady, and some of his experiences at the Jewish Hospital of St. Louis.

Correspondence, documents, and other materials from Donald C. Shreffler's term as Professor of Genetics and Chairman of the Department of Genetics.

The collection is comprised mostly of notes from meetings, drafts of publications, and correspondence. The files document DCS's research on the genetics of the immunologic system and the genetic basis of organ and tissue transplant rejections.

Hamburger discusses major points in his long career as an embryologist – his early work in Germany with Hans Spemann and the study of the organizer effect; his experience coming to the United States in 1932 as a Rockefeller fellow and staying on after Hitler’s “cleansing of the professions” in Germany; joining the faculty of Washington University and his research there. Hamburger talks about his colleagues such as Rita Levi-Montalcini and their discovery of naturally occurring neuronal death, his work with Levi-Montalcini and Stanley Cohen on the discovery of nerve growth factor (NGF), and his study of animal behavior development and motility.

The Ogura papers include five document series including general correspondence, research manuscripts, appointment calendars, medical school notes, and reprints. In terms of subjects, the general correspondence includes Ogura’s editorial work for The Laryngoscope and peer reviews for other journals, as well as professional associations to which Ogura gave much time. Of local interest is material on Barnes Hospital, Jewish Hospital, but mostly on the administration of the department of Otolaryngology in the Washington University School of Medicine.

The research manuscripts and reprints cover his clinical research interests in head and neck surgery, laryngeal physiology and transplantation, and nasopulmonary mechanics. Formats of the paper documents include correspondence, department records, notebooks, manuscripts, and reprints. The reprints are a sampling of his 300 published articles.
