Washington University School of Nursing Collection from the University of Missouri - St. Louis Photographs

This collection consists of 32 images depicting Washington University School of Nursing interiors, events, and students. The bulk of the collection consists of interiors from a promotional booklet produced by Washington Unviersity School of Nursing. These images were individually digitized, and the collection still includes the original booklet. The collection also includes scenes from Washington University School of Nursing homecoming parades, three images of unidentified nursing students, and a composite portrait of the class of June 1953.

This collection consists of 231 photographs and negatives depicting scenes from Wendell G. Scott's professional life. The majority of the photographs in the collection were taken by Scott himself, including many images of his Barnes Hospital colleagues at work, and views of sailors working and undergoing physical therapy at a U.S. Navy Hospital. Depicted subjects also include Scott and colleagues x-raying patients, group portraits with Scott at cancer research events, and views of Dr. John Sappington's historic house.

McDonnell Medical Sciences Building Photographs

This collection consists of 161 photographs and 1 framed document depicting the groundbreaking ceremony for and construction progress on the McDonnell Medical Sciences Building. The collection also includes a few exterior views of the building and courtyard after its completion. The framed document is an electrocardiogram and impedance pneumogram of astronauts James A. McDivitt and Edward H. White, II, taken during the Gemini IV mission in 1965 and presented to Washingon University School of Medicine at the groundbreaking ceremony in 1967.

This collection consists of 15 photographs of Robert J. Glaser, 1920?-1965 and 23 drawings by Aphrodite J. Hofsommer, 1929-1939?. Photographs include group portraits of the Harvard University Lancet Club, views from a Boston City Hospital Centennial and Thorndike Memorial Laboratory 40th anniversary event, views of the Streptococcal Clinic at Washington University School of Medicine, and scenes from a dinner party with Glaser and Arthur Kornberg. The drawings were created by Aphrodite J. Hofsommer for publications by Drs. Ernest Sachs, Meyer Wiener, Bennet Y. Alvis, Ellis Fischel, and others, in the 1920s and 1930s.

Washington University Medical Center Photographs

This collection consists of 27 photographs depicting scenes from Washington Unversity Medical Center. Subjects include views of the dedication ceremony for Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) on April 29, 1915, interiors of WUSM and Barnes Hospital, an exterior view of Queeny Tower, and two views of an interactive model of Washington University Medical Center. Also included is a photograph from the groundbreaking ceremony for the Cancer Research Building, circa 1949.

Washington University Medical Center Construction and Dedication Photographs

This collection consists of 41 glass lantern slides and duplicate photographic prints. This series of glass slides appears to have been collected in the Department of Surgery as a presentation on the history of the Washington University Medical Center circa 1912 through 1939. A few of the slides duplicate photographs found in other visual collections. However, the majority are unique photographs of the construction of the WU Medical Center, or are the only visual records documenting important events, including the cornerstone laying for the WUSM North Building in 1913 (VC057025, VC057026) and a ceremony prior to the construction of St. Louis Maternity Hospital (VC057037). Descriptions of the pictures were provided by Dr. Eugene Bricker.

This collection consists of 19 photographs and 3 bound albums depicting members of the Washington University School of Medicine class of 1934 at reunion celebrations. The unbound photographs duplicate the photographs in the first album commemorating the 30th reunion of the class of 1934. The other two albums depict scenes from the class's 35th and 55th reunions.

This collection consists of 83 photographs, negatives, and artifacts related to Ben H. Senturia. Many of the photographs and all of the negatives depict unidentified men and women at meetings, conferences, and parties. Photographs also include group portraits with Ben H. Senturia, including groups at conferences, Senturia with classmates, and group portraits of Barnes Hospital medical staff. Artifacts include two human skulls, and a medal for a nasal speculum designed by Senturia.

Baumgarten Reception Photographs

This collection consists of 36 photographs depicting scenes from a St. Louis Medical Society reception honoring the Baumgarten Family on November 2, 1981. The fourth and final memeber of the Baumgarten family to practice medicine in St. Louis was Walter Baumgarten, Jr., who was an honorary curator of the St. Louis Medical Society from 1964 until his death in 1980.

Harold A. Bulger Photographs and Prints

This collection consists of 176 photographs and prints taken and collected by Harold A. Bulger and relating to the history of medical education in St. Louis. Depicted subjects include Joseph Nash McDowell and Missouri Medical College, St. Louis Medical and Missouri Dental College, Beaumont Hospital Medical College, St. John's Hospital, Washington University Hospital, St. Louis University Medical Department, Marion-Sims College of Medicine, Barnes Medical College, St. Louis College of Physicians and Surgeons, American Medical College, and Homoeopathic Medical College of Missouri. Many of the photographs were taken by Bulger in the 1930s to document the former sites of defunct insitutions. The photographs are often mounted and juxtaposed with prints of drawings or engravings depicting the medical college buildings at their former locations in St. Louis. Some of the prints depict Missouri Medical College (also known as McDowell Medical College) when it was taken over and used as a military prison during the Civil War. Many of the original prints, photographs, and daguerrotypes are housed by the Missouri Historical Society, and copy prints were made for Bulger.
