This collection consists of 166 photographs and negatives, primarily photographs depicting group and composite portraits of classes from the Washington University School of Dental Medicine from 1890 to 1991. In addition to the photographs, there are also a small number of negatives depicting exterior views of the School of Dental Medicine building at 4559 Scott Avenue.

The collection consists of eight series. The attempt has been made to maintain the original order as much as possible, and particularly in the correspondence and scientific data series. Much of the material, however, was transmitted and accessioned in small portions in the years 1963-1966, and in some cases items were placed on display in the Library before being arranged in series. The microfilming, moreover, was carried out before the final arrangement and analysis of the collection could be made; somewhat premature filming decisions have, therefore, affected the final arrangement that is presented here and some items are missing or poorly described on the film.

This small collection comprises records from Dr. English's time as a medical student at Missouri Medical College, including lecture tickets, lecture schedules, and correspondence. The collection also includes photographs of a classmate, Charles E. Riseling, and a notice of certification for the practice of medicine in Illinois.

This collection consists of 40 photographs, drawings, and pamphlets from the medical career of Herman Tuholske. Photographs include scenes of Tuholske performing surgery in an operating theater, patient photographs, patient x-rays and an views of an autopsy specimen from a patient who had experienced an extra-uterine pregnancy. The majority of the drawings are pencil diagrams Tuholske created from the autopsy specimen. The German-language pamphlets are titled, "Verein der Meseriker."

Series 1 and 2 of the Max A. Goldstein papers include lecture notes and travel diaries, 1892-1894, the manuscript for his The Acoustic Method for the Training of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Child (1939), other manuscripts, reprints of articles, and pamphlets. Series 3 is notes from acoustical instrument catalogs, and Series 5 is a notebook on pathological anatomy and other subjects. Series 4 relates to Dr. Goldstein's purchase of antiquarian books that today form the CID-Max A. Goldstein Collection in Speech and Hearing. Series 6 consists of two letters by Helen Keller. Series 7 is Dr. Goldstein's English language paraphrase of a German article, “Die Sprache des Kindes,” by Ernst Tappolet. Series 8 consists of one letter by C.G. Goodwin. Series 9 contains Dr. Goldstein's monogrammed silk handkerchief.

This collection consists of manuscript lecture notes by Sidney I. Schwab from classes that he took at Harvard Medical School, 1892-1896. There are six volumes in the collection: 1. Legal Medicine by Dr. Draper, 1895-1896; 2. Dermatology, 1894-1895; 3. Neurology, 1895-1896; 4. Theory & Practice, 1894-1895; 5. Clinical Medicine [by] Dr. Shattuck, Dr. Mason; Clinical Surgery [by] Dr. Porter, 1895; 6. Lab Sketches, 1892-1893.

This collection contains the professional and personal papers of Katherine Bain, MD. The records of Dr. Bain’s professional career focus primarily on her work for the Children’s Bureau in the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare and on her work for UNICEF. The records of Dr. Bain’s personal life are equally robust and are reflective of her long life and close relationships with friends and family members.

Records of her professional activities include correspondence, reprints of publications, oral histories, and photographs. Of note are two oral histories focused on Dr. Bain’s career and the history of the Children’s Bureau that were conducted in the 1990s (see Series 4). Also noteworthy are photographs and 35mm slides which capture different periods of Dr. Bain’s career, especially her work with UNICEF (see Series 6). Dr. Bain’s curriculum vitae, lists of her publications, and other biographical materials are included in Series 1.

Records of Dr. Bain’s personal life include correspondence, oral histories, and photographs. Of particular note is an issue of a family newsletter, “The Bain Banner,” published on the occasion of Dr. Bain’s 100th birthday (see Series 1). It contains biographical stories about Dr. Bain and recollections from friends and family. Also of note is an interview with Dr. Bain and her sister, Maria Bain White, conducted by a family member in the 1990s (see Series 4). The photographs and 35mm slides depict the long span of Dr. Bain’s life and include photographs of Dr. Bain as a young child, many of her beloved pet dogs, and her close friend and housemate Christine Glass (see Series 5).

Records of Dr. Bain’s long friendship with Christine Glass are sprinkled throughout the collection. In addition to the photographs and 35mm slides in Series 5, the collection includes correspondence from Ms. Glass (see Series 1), and a photograph of Dr. Bain and Ms. Glass in Italy (see Series 6).

The Leo Loeb papers consist of Dr. Loeb’s note books, lectures, research notes and manuscripts,  and scrapbooks. The series of personal correspondence is largely incoming and fragmentary with some letters filed in  Series 8: Bibliographical notes on the medical literature, manuscripts, research pathology data and occasional related correspondence, Undated & 1921-1958. The papers also include notes and drafts for two unpublished books. One is on mental processes and titled _Psychical Goods_or _The Imponderables. _The other unfinished book is on cancer.

This small collection consists of three series. Series 1 consists of biographical information about Louis Crusius collected by the St. Louis Medical Society. Series 2 includes two publications with illustrations by Louis Cruisius, and Series 3 contains the Antikamnia calendars illustrated by Cruisus.

The collection contains mostly correspondence and reprints, but also included are newspaper and journal clippings, manuscripts of lectures, and papers on ophthalmology and the history of medicine.

This collection consists of 19 photographs related to the career of Jacques J. Bronfenbrenner. Depicted subjects include signed portraits of Bronfenbrenner's colleagues Hiromu Tsuchiya and Kenneth L. Burdon, photographs of members of the Institut Pasteur in Paris, group portraits of the Washington University School of Medicine Department of Bacteriology and Immunology, and Bronfenbrenner at the Rockefeller Institute with Hideyo Noguchi.

This collection consists of 12 photographs and 1 diploma related to Barnes Medical College. The photographs primarily depict Gross Anatomy students and their dissected cadavers. Other depicted subjects include exterior views of Barnes Medical College, interior views of the Barnes Dental College Infirmary, group portraits of Barnes Medical College students, and a Doctor of Medicine diploma from Barnes Medical College awarded to Charles DeWitt Hibbetts.

This collection predominantly consists of Dr. Terry’s professional correspondence.  There are multiple series of correspondence which have remained separated and in the same arrangement as they were received by Dr. Terry.  There are also a number of reprints and publications in this collection, most of which were authored by Dr. Terry.  Most of Dr. Terry’s reprints have been bound together and placed into Series 1.  Also of note in this collection are two different series of research notes and drafts of papers on Sprengel’s deformity and fluid in the lungs.

This collection consists of 22 artifacts pertaining to the matriculation of Charles L. Sherman at Barnes Medical College, 1896-1901. The collection includes a scholarship certificate, lecture schedule pamphlet, course cards and matriculation tickets, and a leather wallet that originally held the academic cards.
