Baumgarten Reception Photographs

This collection consists of 36 photographs depicting scenes from a St. Louis Medical Society reception honoring the Baumgarten Family on November 2, 1981. The fourth and final memeber of the Baumgarten family to practice medicine in St. Louis was Walter Baumgarten, Jr., who was an honorary curator of the St. Louis Medical Society from 1964 until his death in 1980.

Harold A. Bulger Photographs and Prints

This collection consists of 176 photographs and prints taken and collected by Harold A. Bulger and relating to the history of medical education in St. Louis. Depicted subjects include Joseph Nash McDowell and Missouri Medical College, St. Louis Medical and Missouri Dental College, Beaumont Hospital Medical College, St. John's Hospital, Washington University Hospital, St. Louis University Medical Department, Marion-Sims College of Medicine, Barnes Medical College, St. Louis College of Physicians and Surgeons, American Medical College, and Homoeopathic Medical College of Missouri. Many of the photographs were taken by Bulger in the 1930s to document the former sites of defunct insitutions. The photographs are often mounted and juxtaposed with prints of drawings or engravings depicting the medical college buildings at their former locations in St. Louis. Some of the prints depict Missouri Medical College (also known as McDowell Medical College) when it was taken over and used as a military prison during the Civil War. Many of the original prints, photographs, and daguerrotypes are housed by the Missouri Historical Society, and copy prints were made for Bulger.

This collection consists of 48 35mm Kodachrome slides representing a series of 45 oil paintings commissioned by Parke, Davis and Company and painted by Robert A Thom. The series was titled "Great Moments in Medicine." In addition to this collection of slides, there are two oversized portfolio versions of this series; one bound copy and one unbound copy.

This collection consists of 43 photographs of Evarts A. Graham and his colleagues, and 1 drawing. Depicted subjects include inscribed studio portraits of Graham's former students and colleagues, studio portraits of Graham, views of Graham performing an operation, group portraits of the American Board of Surgery, and views of Graham receiving the Lister Medal. Also included in the collection are several exterior views of Graham's St. Louis home, taken in 1995. The drawing depicts three mice smoking and was drawn by Ernst Wynder, Graham's student and coauthor on a study linking smoking with lung cancer.

This collection consists of 15 photographs from the Washington University School of Medicine Department of Otolaryngology. The photographs are primarily group shots of staff and post-graduate students from the mid-20th century. Also included in this collection are photographs of Evarts A. Graham and Robert A. Moore that have inscriptions to Theodore E. Walsh, who was the head of the Otolaryngology Department from 1940 until his retirement in 1966.

This collection consists of 103 certificates, medals, plaques, academic hoods, and miscellaneous memorabilia documenting the career of Evarts A. Graham. The certificates include degree certificates, honorary degree and fellowship certicates, award certificates, and memorial certificates from the Barnes Hospital Board of Trustees, the American College of Surgeons, and the State of Missouri. Medals, pins, and medallions include the French Legion D'Honneur Medal, the Lister Medal awarded by the Royal College of Surgery of England, the American Cancer Society Award Medal, among various award medals, distinguished service medals, and medical society medals. Miscellany includes a stethoscope owned by Graham, a Journal of Thoracic Surgey, Graham's application and membership cards to the St. Louis Medical Society, and a copy of a letter from Graham to Ernest Wynder informing Wynder of his cancer diagnosis.

Ruth Silberberg Photomicrographs

This collection consists of 2136 photomicrographs originally mounted in 5 notebooks that have been unbound and arranged into 37 folders. Ruth Silberberg states in her oral history that the Silberbergs learned electron microscopy in 1959, so the electron micrographs in the series probably antedate 1959. Each photomicrograph is individually labeled with information such as mice strain (C57 or Dba), sex, age, hormone or other treatment with dose and frequency and other information concerning the microphotograph, including the level of magnification.
