Anderson discusses his experiences as a student at the Washington University School of Medicine in the 1920s and some of his instructors, including Evarts A. Graham and Ernest Sachs. Anderson also details his experiences as senior medical officer on a hospital transport ship during World War II and his continuing study of abdominal surgery at the Allgemeine Krankenhaus at the University of Vienna. Collection of Gasser's selected reprints, 1914-1927. Many of the scientific articles concern Gasser's work with Joseph Erlanger using a cathode-ray oscillograph to amplify and record electrical conduction, or action potentials, of nerves. Others are concerned with muscular contraction and the study and treatment of shock The collection also includes a bound copy of "Experimental Neurology," (Supplement 1, 1964) which contains Gasser's autobiographical memoir.

The Jacob G. Probstein papers include short transcripts of at least two oral history interviews with Probstein on Jewish Hospital (1977), Probstein's short histories of the pancreatitis research group: "Sam Gray/ Michael Somogyi/ May Fund and Pancreatis"(1979), and two letters from Helen Graham about Evarts A. Graham(1965-1968). The Jacob G. Probstein reprints, 1924-1970 are the bulk of the material. The focus of the oral histories are Jewish Hospital of St. Louis, its chiefs of surgery, its patients (the Jewish community), its donors, the role of nurses and nurse administrators, Dr. Michael Somogyi and the pancreatitis and diabetes research group, the clinics, and early operative techniques in the old Delmar location of the hospital.

The collection includes correspondence, legal papers, newspaper clippings, and bound short scientific publications documenting Bronfenbrenner’s career. There is also a file of papers relating to the Bronfenbrenner Memorial Award, established after his death.

Correspondence of James Barrett Brown, Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, while chief of plastic surgery at the Valley Forge General Hospital, Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, 1943-1945. Also contains files of photographs of patients illustrating treatments. The collection includes 20 reprints, dating from 1931 to 1942.

O’Leary’s career illustrates the establishment of neurology at Washington University School of Medicine as a distinct medical discipline.  The O’Leary papers include correspondence, lectures, manuscripts, card files, photographs, certificates, and reprints of articles.  They document his work in many areas of neurological research, but particularly his investigations in the diagnosis and treatment of ataxia and epilepsy.  There is also significant material on O’Leary’s contributions to American Neurological Association, Epilepsy Association of America, Epilepsy Foundation of America, WUSM Administration, and WUSM Department of Neurology.

The collection contains mostly correspondence and reprints, but also included are newspaper and journal clippings, manuscripts of lectures, and papers on ophthalmology and the history of medicine.

Cook talks about Dr. Jesse S. Myer, gastroenterologist and biographer of William Beaumont. Cook also relates some of his experiences as a medical student in the early years of the 20th century and as an intern at St. Louis City Hospital. He describes the practice of medicine at that time and the prevalence and treatment of diseases such as typhoid fever, malaria, and syphilis.

This collection consists of 4 drawings and 2 certificates from John B. Shapleigh. Three of the drawings are cartoon caricatures that include a cut-out photograph of the subject's face and a drawn body.

The collection is comprised of material gathered by John B. Shapleigh, II concerning his grandfather. Although most of the files were created posthumously, notably the memorial addresses and newspaper clippings, some are contemporary to the elder Shapleigh. Of special interest are the miscellaneous personal memorabilia and the report on the Washington University Hospital.

The interviewer asked John Herweg to discuss his experiences at St. Louis Children's Hospital during the Alexis Hartmann era, 1936-early 1960s. As a medical student at Washington University in 1942-1945. He mentions his first wife, Janet Scovill, who had finished her pediatric residency at Children's before him. Janet died in 1958. He also speaks of his present wife Dottie Glahn, who was head nurse of the infant ward at St. Louis Children's Hospital from 1947-1959. The interviewer asked him his recollections of Mrs. Langenberg, Gracie Jones and other women on women on the Board of Children's hospital. He also briefly discussed interactions with Estelle Claiborne, the hospital administrator. He recalls that World War II's major effect on St. Louis Children's Hospital was reduction of the number of house officers. The residents who were in charge of the hospital during the nighttime hours were consequently overworked. Concerning the Butler Ward, the segregated ward for African-Americans, he admits the house officers might have integrated Children's Hospital earlier. He thought integration came about when Dave Golden called up Hartmann later and said he wanted to put an African American patient on a ward by treatment needed rather than in the Butler ward. Hartmann agreed and Herwig thought that was the beginning of integration of St. Louis Children's Hospital.

Tape of Oral history interview with John Herweg by Candace O'Connor along with her notes from the interview. Two biographical accounts on John Herweg include "In the Interest of Small Children," which was prepared on Herweg's retirement as Associate Dean for Students in 1990 from oral history and other published souces in the archives. It was produced at the request of Library Director, Susan Crawford and M. Kenton King, Danforth Professor of Preventive Medicine.

The collection contains letters from Joseph C. Hinsey to Mr. and Mrs. Carlton Hunt, William Dock, and others. Hinsey’s address at Joseph Erlanger’s memorial service is included.

This collection includes 37 certificates and artifacts documenting the professional and scientific achievements of Joseph Erlanger. Certificates and medallians include various honorary degree diplomas, award certificates and medallions, and scientific society membership certificates. The collection also includes various academic hoods, an academic gown, Erlanger, Gasser and Bishop's home-made cathode ray tube, and the death mask of Erlanger.

The collection consists of eight series. The attempt has been made to maintain the original order as much as possible, and particularly in the correspondence and scientific data series. Much of the material, however, was transmitted and accessioned in small portions in the years 1963-1966, and in some cases items were placed on display in the Library before being arranged in series. The microfilming, moreover, was carried out before the final arrangement and analysis of the collection could be made; somewhat premature filming decisions have, therefore, affected the final arrangement that is presented here and some items are missing or poorly described on the film.

This collection consists of 54 photographs and 2 postcards depicting the professional life and scientific achievements of Dr. Joseph Erlanger. Depicted subjects include formal portraits of Erlanger, scenes from a dinner hosted by President John F. and Jackie Kennedy at the White House for Nobel Laureates, studio views of Erlanger's Nobel Prize medal and certificate, and scenes from the presentation of Erlanger's papers to Washington University School of Medicine's Library in 1963.

The Ogura papers include five document series including general correspondence, research manuscripts, appointment calendars, medical school notes, and reprints. In terms of subjects, the general correspondence includes Ogura’s editorial work for The Laryngoscope and peer reviews for other journals, as well as professional associations to which Ogura gave much time. Of local interest is material on Barnes Hospital, Jewish Hospital, but mostly on the administration of the department of Otolaryngology in the Washington University School of Medicine.

The research manuscripts and reprints cover his clinical research interests in head and neck surgery, laryngeal physiology and transplantation, and nasopulmonary mechanics. Formats of the paper documents include correspondence, department records, notebooks, manuscripts, and reprints. The reprints are a sampling of his 300 published articles.
