Early records on research include correspondence and laboratory and specimen notebooks, ca. 1955-1975. Later papers consist of correspondence, photos, NIH and tobacco grants, patents, lecture slides, reprints (including correspondence), newspaper articles, files on meetings, appointment calendars, reprints, and books.

This collection consists of 2103 photographs and artifacts from the St. Louis School for Occupational Therapy and the Washington University School of Medicine Program in Occupational Therapy. Most of the photographs depict faculty, staff, and students. Some of the photographs depict Occupational Therapists and patients at various military hospitals in the United States during World War II. The majority of photographs were originally bound in scrabooks.

In this oral history project, Dr. Edwin McCleskey and his associates, medical students James Carter and William Geideman, conducted interviews with 13 individuals who played a role in the desegregation of Washington University School of Medicine and its associated hospitals.

The interviewees include Ella Brown, the last Director of Nursing Services at Homer G. Phillips Hospital; Dr. Robert Lee, the first Assistant Dean for Minority Students at the School of Medicine; Dr. Julian Mosley, the second Black graduate of the School of Medicine; and Dr. Howard Phillip Venable, the last chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Homer G. Phillips and a vocal advocate for civil rights.

Topics include the segregated facilities at Barnes Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital prior to integration; the events and decisions leading to desegregation in the medical school and hospitals; recruitment, admissions, and retention of minority students at the School of Medicine; Homer G. Phillips Hospital, its role in the Black community, and its closure; the state of health care for the Black community in St. Louis; and the desegregation of local and national medical societies. The collection also includes some related documents donated by the interviewees.

Dr. McCleskey was an assistant professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Physiology at the School of Medicine at the time he developed this project and conducted the interviews with his associates.

The interviews were all recorded on audio cassette tapes. Additions to the interview transcripts are marked with brackets. Interviewees were allowed to review these transcripts and make grammatical corrections. Also, interviewees were allowed to suggest additions or retractions from the transcript to ensure their meaning was clear.

In general, there are some discrepancies between the audio recording and interview transcripts, including elisions and occasional rewordings, however these changes do not create any significant impediments to understanding the content of the interviews. In some cases, noted in the series-level records and the transcripts, interviewees made substantial edits to their interview transcripts, which created additional discrepancies between the recording and transcript, but the edits do not interfere with understanding the original content.

Approximately 17,000 35mm negatives and approximately 500 contact sheets and photographs featuring faculty, staff, students, and facilities of the Washington University School of Medicine created by the office of Medical Public Affairs from 1987 to 1994.

Guze discusses his experience as a student of the Washington University School of Medicine in the early 1940s, and his memories of faculty members such as Carl and Gerty Cori, Mildred Trotter, Ethel Ronzoni Bishop, Joseph Erlanger, Barry Wood, Evarts A. Graham, Helen Tredway Graham, Sarah Luse, and Carl Moore. Guze explains how his interest in the field of psychiatry developed and the influence of George Saslow on his career. He also discusses building the psychiatry program at Washington University with his colleagues Eli Robins and George Winokur, his work on the genetics of psychiatric disorders, and the interest and development of child psychiatry as a discipline within the medical school. Colleagues such as M. Kenton King. Virginia Weldon, Paula J. Clayton, Lee Robins, and James Anthony are discussed. This oral history consists of a series of seven interviews conducted in 1994. The Eli Robins papers are arranged in twenty-seven organizational series on the administration of the Psychiatry Department from 1962-1975 and the research of the Eli Robins labs.  The bulk of the collection is in the General Correspondence files (Series 4), General files (Series 5), Associations and Societies (Series 6), and Laboratory Notebooks and Records (Series 19).  Included in the Robins papers are letters, a complete set of Journal articles (Series 1), and handwritten notes. In addition, there are drafts of articles that Dr. Robins and members of his lab compiled for publication and corresponding data collection documents used for research and analysis.

The personal and professional papers of David Goldring contain two series.  The subject of Series 2 is the history of pediatric cardiology at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Washington University in St. Louis.
