Leonore Goldstein discusses her husband Max A. Goldstein, his art and book collecting, his founding of the journal The Laryngoscope, and his founding of Central Institute for the Deaf in 1914. The audio quality of the recording is poor. Though there are two interviewers, the transcript does not reflect which interviewer is speaking. The tape ends abruptly. Penn discusses his legacy as a third generation graduate of the Washington University School of Medicine and its antecedent institutions, the Missouri Medical College and the St. Louis Medical College. Penn describes moving to San Francisco during the Depression and starting his medical career there. He also tells of his service as a surgeon during World War II. This interview was recorded during the 50th reunion of the Washington University School of Medicine Class of 1933. The audio quality is poor. Mildred Trotter Oral History (OH009)

Trotter discusses her interest in anatomy and the events leading her to joining the faculty of the Washington University School of Medicine department of Anatomy. She recounts several events in the history of the department and its heads over the years, including Robert J. Terry, Edmund V. Cowdry, and Edward Dempsey. Trotter describes serving as an anthropologist in Hawaii identifying skeletal remains after the Second World War, changes in the study and teaching of anatomy, and teaching for a year at Makerere University College in Kampala, Uganda. She also discusses changes in the Washington University School of Medicine over the course of her career as well as sex discrimination in salaries and promotion at the university. The transcript combines two conversations between Mildred Trotter and Estelle Brodman recorded in May, 1972. The transcript was edited in 1985 by Paul G. Anderson to present events of Dr. Trotter's life in chronological order. Emendations of Dr. Trotter's remarks are indicated by words or passages enclosed in brackets. Wolff shares his remembrances of his grandparents, Leonore and Max A. Goldstein. He discusses his grandfather’s career – the founding of the Central Institute for the Deaf and the scientific journal the Laryngoscope, and Goldstein’s travel and study in Europe. Noted are Goldstein’s penchant for collecting rare books, art, and Native American relics. Wolff provides details about the campus of CID and the history of its buildings and development. Also discussed are CID faculty and staff members such as Helen S. Lane, Julia M. Connery, Mildred A. McGinnis, Rafael Lorente de Nó, S. Richard Silverman, Hallowell Davis, and Jean Moog. Wolff also relates some of his memories of growing up in St. Louis in the 1930s and vacationing with his family in Frankfort, Michigan. White discusses his decision to come to St. Louis Children’s Hospital and the Washington University School of Medicine in 1920, and his interaction with Williams McKim Marriott. He describes the medical ethics course he taught for over twenty years. White shares his views on fee-splitting, abortion and birth control, euthanasia, women in medicine, malpractice insurance, and answers a question about his involvement in the integration of the Academy of Pediatrics in the 1940’s. The discussion covers White’s medical practice and treatment of disadvantaged children and the prevalence of lead-poisoning in that population. The interview concludes with White reciting one of his poems. Interviewed by Darryl Podoll on January 29, 1979. OH036. Approximate Length 60 minutes.
