Handwritten note on the back of the photograph reads: "Somewhat less unsightly than Bouder-Balla's mud hovel in the 'garden' in front of Grand Hotel. Unfinished Officer's Mess and club. Bou Hanifia. 1943 (Nov.) The marabout is the white bldg. Behind on right. This site was requisitioned from Bouder-Ballah! (to help the French get rid of an eye-sore)."

It is beside the doorway (entrance) of the Domus Vettiorum, Pompeii, Italy. Covered by eruption of Vesuvius 69 AD. Present tourist guides keep the cover closed over the painting, except for a fee. Inside, the artistic murals and painting of symbolic activities were preserved in clean and vivid colors in 1944. -- LDC. The guide said the Vettei Brothers were bachelors, but gay livers [sic]."
