The print is mounted on a board. Several captions are glued to the back of the print, the first of which reads: "3. Letheon. Photographic copy of a daguerreotype by Southworth and Hawes of 5 1/2 Tremont Row, Boston, showing many of the surgeons who were present at the amputation which proved to the world that anaesthesia is practical re-enacting the original scene a few years later."

The photograph is mounted on foamcore. Typed caption accompanying the photograph reads: "Dr. Evarts A. Graham / Assisting him: Dr. Richard Carlin / Scrub Nurse: Malvina Isach Brooks, a Washington University School of Nursing alumna from the Class of '45 / Circulating Nurse: Charlene Galloway Smith, a Washington University School of Nursing alumna from the class of '46."

This collection consists of 43 photographs of Evarts A. Graham and his colleagues, and 1 drawing. Depicted subjects include inscribed studio portraits of Graham's former students and colleagues, studio portraits of Graham, views of Graham performing an operation, group portraits of the American Board of Surgery, and views of Graham receiving the Lister Medal. Also included in the collection are several exterior views of Graham's St. Louis home, taken in 1995. The drawing depicts three mice smoking and was drawn by Ernst Wynder, Graham's student and coauthor on a study linking smoking with lung cancer.
