Group portrait of the first entering class, Homer G. Phillips School of Nursing.

Nurses identified as: (seated l-r) Beatrice Hinch and Agnes Smith; (standing l-r) Nellie Mischeaux, Bessie Cole, and Beatrice Wilkerson Walton. Copy print made from original halftone print. Print likely made from the article: Venable, H. Phillip. 'The History of Homer G. Phillips Hospital,' Journal of the National Medical Association, v. 53, no. 6, November 1961, p.546. Label on back of copy print reads: "St. Louis Story Ch. 5, Figure 5." However, Richards' essay "The St. Louis Story" published as Chapter 5 in "A Century of Black Surgeons," edited by Organ and Kosiba, 1987 does not include this photograph.
