This collection includes items related to Barnes Hospital. From the bequest which funded the creation of the hospital; to the hospital’s opening at the end of 1914; and continuing up to and beyond its merger with Jewish Hospital in 1996, the history of Barnes Hospital is documented in a variety of material formats. The collection includes administrative records; staff correspondence; hospital publications; newspaper and magazine clippings; scrapbooks; photographs; VHS tapes; and artifacts. Of note is the collection of hospital publications (series 4), which includes serial magazines and annual reports of the hospital, as well as ephemera such as brochures and flyers. Also noteworthy is the hospital superintendent’s correspondence collection (series 3) covering the years 1913-1926; the hospital’s book of forms from the year of its opening (series 1); a scrapbook containing correspondence of Robert A. Barnes and the original trustees of Barnes Hospital (series 8); and the Hospital's Staff Register covering October 13, 1915 to January 13, 1958 (series 5).

Barnes Hospital (Saint. Louis, Mo.)

Administrative, 1914-1994.

Series 1 focuses on forms, registers, and schedules used to enable and record the day-to-day functioning of the hospital. It also contains portion of the governing Board’s meeting minutes. The series includes two sub-series divisions. The first sub-series consists of various hospital schedules, including surgical, room assignments, and Medico-Military for the years 1932-1937. The second sub-series includes thirteen binders containing hospital Board of Directors monthly meeting minutes for the years 1992-1994. The remainder of the series includes a patient census for Barnes Hospital, 1936-1948; McMillan Hospital, 1943-1948; St. Louis Maternity Hospital, 1944-1948; and Washington University Clinics, 1944-1948. Boxes 2-5 contain registers of patients admitted and discharged from Barnes Hospital for the years 1958-1964. Finally, a book containing various blank forms for the first year of the hospital’s operation is included in box 6. The series and sub-series are arranged chronologically.

Contains graphs displaying monthly number of patients for Barnes Hospital from 1936-1948, McMillan Hospital from 1943-1948, St. Louis Maternity Hospital from 1944-1948, and Washington University Clinics from 1944-1948. Book containing examples of all business, medical, and dental forms and labels used in Barnes and its affiliated hospitals during the years 1914-1915.  Prices are included.  These forms were produced for the hospitals by Geo. D. Barnard & Co., Hoellmich Bros. and Nixon-Jones office supply houses. Forms in ledger include: Barnes Hospital agreement to furnish supplies; ambulance daily report; anesthesia chart; application for employment; baby record; blood and urine chart; certificate of release; clothing tag; complaint slip; critical condition notice; daily menu report form; daily request for food supplies; death notice; dental record; department of clinical pathology chart; diet list; dining room card; general ledger; head nurses daily report of dining room orders issues; labor record; metabolism chart; narcosis form; nurse time sheet; nursery record; operating room daily report; pathological report on sputum, stool, and stomach; patient census slip; patient chart; pay roll; pharmacy daily report; pregnancy record; puerperium record; purchase record; requisite for photographic exam; supply ordering form; supply requisition; telephone record; urinary chart; vestibular test chart; visitor permit; wage receipt; ward laundry; and x-ray card. Also included are Children’s Hospital patient chart and Washington University Training School for Nurses patient form.

Surgical Schedules, 1932-1937.

Schedules for operating rooms and Medico-Military course at Barnes Hospital, as well as room assignments. The sub-series is incomplete, and contains only certain select dates' schedules through the years listed. The sub-series is arranged chronologically.
