Files and personal correspondence pertaining to Mission to Thailand, June-August 1951.

The collection includes correspondence, legal papers, newspaper clippings, and bound short scientific publications documenting Bronfenbrenner’s career. There is also a file of papers relating to the Bronfenbrenner Memorial Award, established after his death.

Bribach discusses his experiences in medical school and his later studies in medicine in Germany. He also comments on some of his instructors, such as Robert J. Terry; classmates, such as Sherwood Moore; and his medical internship at St. Louis City Hospital. Interviewed by Darryl Podoll on October 8, 1975. OH019. Approximate Length 90 minutes.

In the first interview Cowdry describes his early days at the Peking Union Medical College, established by the Rockefeller Foundation in China, from 1917 to 1921. He describes the state of medical education and practice of medicine in China at that time. The second interview concerns the 15th Japan Medical Congress in March-April, 1959 and the work of Dr. H. Marvin Pollard and his survey of Japanese teaching hospitals.

Hildreth discusses the dispute between the Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes Hospital in the early 1960s, and the roles of Edgar M. Queeny (chairman of the Trustees of Barnes Hospital), Edward W. Dempsey (dean of the medical school), consultants Joseph Hinsey and John H. Knowles, and Washington University chancellor George Pake. Hildreth also talks about some of the faculty of the medical school while he was a student in the mid-1920s, such as Evarts A. In his oral history interview, Jones discusses some of his experiences as a medical officer during World War I. He also recalls some of the changes he witnessed over the years in the field of neurology and at the Washington University School of Medicine. Jones recalls some of his colleagues, such as Vilray P. Blair, George Dock, Ernest Sachs, and Sidney Schwab.

Much of this collection was assembled by Louise H. Marshall, formerly of Washington University and later of the University of California, Los Angeles. Mrs. Marshall used materials related to Dr. Bishop that she had personally collected, as well as items supplied by her husband, Wade Marshall, and by Dr. Bishop’s brother, Frederick Bishop. All of these materials were placed together with items that had been kept in the Department of Neurology after Dr. Bishop’s death. Included in the collection are correspondence, manuscripts, notes, diagrams, and various ephemera. All photographs and many of the drawings in this collection were separated from the written documents and placed in a visual collection (VC034). The resulting arrangement reflects the mixed provenance and the many hands that have contributed to the collection. It is important to underscore that although Dr. Bishop himself never saw these collections as bibliographic entities, they were assembled in good faith that the effort would help to preserve the memory of this important scientist.

The M. G. Seelig Reprints is a collection of 92 scientific articles authored or co-authored by M. G. Seelig that have been bound in two separate volumes. Volume 1 (1904-1922) is titled “Seelig Reprints.” Volume 2 (1904-1947) is titled “Collected Papers of M. G. Seelig, M.D.” Subjects include shock, clinical surgery, cancer, surgical pathology, and medical history.

The Shaffer papers include ten document series including correspondence, diaries, scrapbooks, short publications, notes, and his Ph.D. dissertation. Major subjects are his research work in biochemistry and the administration of WUSM as dean and head of the Department of Biological Chemistry. His work with Barnes Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, American Society of Biological Chemists and the U. S. Army in World War I are also subjects.

In 2006, this collection contained many deteriorated brittle carbon copies on newsprint and newspaper clippings that chipped or fractured with minimal handling. The acidic newsprint had stained surrounding documents and was losing contrast due to browning. Archives staff made acid-free photocopies to preserve content and contrast for future use and preservation microfilming.

The files in this collection have been arranged into three organizational series: professional meetings, personal correspondence, and laboratory notebooks and lectures. The Sonnenwirth Papers are comprised of files that were recovered from his office at the Microbiology Laboratory of Jewish Hospital. The original file order and folder titles have been maintained. Note that Series 1 (Professional Meetings), which relates to Sonnenwirth’s activities in various professional associations, comprises a significant portion of this collection. The approximate dates of the contents are indicated in the container listing, which follows.

This collection consists of 70 cytological drawings and 5 sketchbooks drawn by E.V. Cowdry. Many of the drawings were matched to articles written by Cowdry and originally published between 1911 and 1932. See FC008, Series 72 for reprints of the relevant articles.

This collection consists of 12 photographs depicting scenes from the early days of electroencephalography, including photographs published in LIFE magazine and the Sunday Mirror, and brain wave graphs published by Hallowell Davis, et. al. in the Journal of Neurophysiology.

This collection consists of 17 instruments used by George H. Bishop when he was conducting physiology research at Washington University School of Medicine.
