This collection includes O'Connor's research for her history of the Washington University Department of Radiology (Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology).  The bulk of the collection consists of biographical files she compiled on department employees as well as audio recordings and transcripts of interviews with current and former staff.

Series 1 and 2 of the Max A. Goldstein papers include lecture notes and travel diaries, 1892-1894, the manuscript for his The Acoustic Method for the Training of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Child (1939), other manuscripts, reprints of articles, and pamphlets. Series 3 is notes from acoustical instrument catalogs, and Series 5 is a notebook on pathological anatomy and other subjects. Series 4 relates to Dr. Goldstein's purchase of antiquarian books that today form the CID-Max A. Goldstein Collection in Speech and Hearing. Series 6 consists of two letters by Helen Keller. Series 7 is Dr. Goldstein's English language paraphrase of a German article, “Die Sprache des Kindes,” by Ernst Tappolet. Series 8 consists of one letter by C.G. Goodwin. Series 9 contains Dr. Goldstein's monogrammed silk handkerchief.

The collection contains letters from Joseph C. Hinsey to Mr. and Mrs. Carlton Hunt, William Dock, and others. Hinsey’s address at Joseph Erlanger’s memorial service is included.

The collection contains letters, newspaper clippings, and other memorabilia written by and pertaining to LH service with Base Hospital 21’s nursing corp, 1917-1919. The original donation also contained photographs which have been removed to Visual Collection 322.

This collection includes 4 series.  Much of the documention included in each of the series details how to operate various medical equipment.  Note that Series 1: Correspondence; Series 2, Micromanipulator; and Series 3: Knife Sharpener and Stropper are available on microfilm only.  Series 4, the scrapbook is available in both microfilm and hardcopy format.

This small collection includes manuscripts and research materials (primarily in German) for two unpublished articles titled: “Die Aerzteheiligen Kosmas und Damian; ihre Wunderheilungen in Licht alter and neuer Medicin” and "Ueber Skelettdarstellungen aus der Antike und ihre Bedeutung fuer die Medizinsgeschichte."

With the editorial assistance of Washington University’s former director of the medical library Estelle Brodman, the article on St. Cosmas and St. Damian (patron saints of physicians, surgeons, and pharmacists) was published by the _Medizin Historische Journal_in 1974 (Volume 9, pages 255-317). The second paper is on the subject of illustrations of skeletons in antiquity.

The materials for both papers include photographs and other graphic materials for the plates, letters concerning the plates, notes, and draft manuscripts.

In this oral history project, Dr. Edwin McCleskey and his associates, medical students James Carter and William Geideman, conducted interviews with 13 individuals who played a role in the desegregation of Washington University School of Medicine and its associated hospitals.

The interviewees include Ella Brown, the last Director of Nursing Services at Homer G. Phillips Hospital; Dr. Robert Lee, the first Assistant Dean for Minority Students at the School of Medicine; Dr. Julian Mosley, the second Black graduate of the School of Medicine; and Dr. Howard Phillip Venable, the last chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Homer G. Phillips and a vocal advocate for civil rights.

Topics include the segregated facilities at Barnes Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital prior to integration; the events and decisions leading to desegregation in the medical school and hospitals; recruitment, admissions, and retention of minority students at the School of Medicine; Homer G. Phillips Hospital, its role in the Black community, and its closure; the state of health care for the Black community in St. Louis; and the desegregation of local and national medical societies. The collection also includes some related documents donated by the interviewees.

Dr. McCleskey was an assistant professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Physiology at the School of Medicine at the time he developed this project and conducted the interviews with his associates.

The interviews were all recorded on audio cassette tapes. Additions to the interview transcripts are marked with brackets. Interviewees were allowed to review these transcripts and make grammatical corrections. Also, interviewees were allowed to suggest additions or retractions from the transcript to ensure their meaning was clear.

In general, there are some discrepancies between the audio recording and interview transcripts, including elisions and occasional rewordings, however these changes do not create any significant impediments to understanding the content of the interviews. In some cases, noted in the series-level records and the transcripts, interviewees made substantial edits to their interview transcripts, which created additional discrepancies between the recording and transcript, but the edits do not interfere with understanding the original content.

The Female Hospital of St. Louis records include a patient register (volume 20 x 15.5 inches) containing names of patients admitted to the hospital, 1876-1886, and a booklet, "Rules and regulations for the government of the Female Hospital submitted by the health commissioner to the board of health, John D. Stevenson, health commissioner," 1884.
