This small collection includes three bound volumes of the collected reprints of David Kipnis.

This collection includes 60 binders of materials used by Dr. Bricker during the creation of manuscripts for publication of his research papers, 155 research notebooks, 2 bound volumes including Dr. Bricker's reprints, and 2 grant applications.

The Samuel B. Guze Papers are arranged in eleven organizational series. The bulk of this large collection is contained in Series 3 (General Files) and Series 5 (Manuscripts). Included in the Guze Papers are letters, journal articles, and handwritten notes. However, a significant portion of the collection consists of drafts of articles that Dr. Guze and his colleagues compiled for publication, as well as the corresponding data collection documents used for research and analysis. Especially noteworthy in the Guze Papers are the two oral histories taken with Dr. Guze, as well as his personal diary located in Series 10. Files containing documents and information compiled by and about Drs. Irene E. Karl (1915-2006) and Michael M. Karl (1915-2006). Correspondence, scientific papers and publications, documents concerning the Karl Lectureship, press releases and press coverage of the Karls' careers and achievements. A copy of the 28th ed of Manual of Medical Therapeutics (1995) inscribed and dedicated to Michael Karl (to be retained with collection as an artifact). The files and items were given as one collection, with no overall discernable order.

The Frank O. Richards papers contains statistical and narrative pertaining primarily to Homer G. Phillips Hospital, the St. Louis municipal hospital founded and operated for African Americans in 1937, but also to two other institutions, City Hospital No. 2 and the Peoples’ Hospital, that treated black patients during decades of official racial segregation. Included are files on William H. Sinkler, medical director of Phillips Hospital from 1941 until 1960. The files in Box 1 in particular document the writing of his chapter, “The St. Louis Story,” in A Century of Black Surgeons. Box 2 contains later additions, notably an undergraduate thesis by Dean Lee Kolnick (2003) on Homer G. Phillips Hospital.

The Robert J. Glaser paper include documentation of Washington University, the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, University of Colorado, Lucille P. Markey Charitable Trust in a tentative series arrangement given below in the accession record 2000-017

Five short publications and one unpublished typescript documenting the career and interests of Andrew B. Jones, Professor of Neurology, 1935-1958 and n.d. Several publications are on outbreaks of St. Louis encephalitis in the 1930s.

In his oral history interview, Jones discusses some of his experiences as a medical officer during World War I. He also recalls some of the changes he witnessed over the years in the field of neurology and at the Washington University School of Medicine. Jones recalls some of his colleagues, such as Vilray P. Blair, George Dock, Ernest Sachs, and Sidney Schwab.

Our medical ancestors, the first one hundred years, second draft typescript. No date. A file folder used in transmittal of the item identifies it as a “second draft” of the manuscript. Typescript, ca, 200 leaves. The title page identifies the authors as Samuel D. Soule and Audrey Kargus Berkley. The typescript is not dated.

Dr. Edmund B. Alvis’ papers document his continued connection with the Washington University Class of 1934, his service with the 21st General Hospital during World War II, and his patient care and research work in ophthalmic surgery from 1934. Types of materials in the collection include correspondence, photographs, publications, records of hospitalized cases and operations, research notes, and case reports.

Of special interest in the Roy R. Peterson papers are manuscripts, photographs, and drawings for two of Dr. Peterson's publications: A Cross-Sectional Approach to Anatomy and Workbook for a Cross-Sectional Approach to Anatomy. The papers are organized in 6 series: 1. Equipment purchases and laboratory design, 1965-1970. 2. Selected student notebooks, 1943-1952. 3. Selected advisee theses, 1970-1971. 4. Study guides in histology, 1951-1957. 5. Selected publications, 1957-1982. . 6. Cross-section photography. 7. Supplement, January, 2005: photographs and corresponding line drawings of cross-sections with identifying labels created in preparation for A Cross-Sectional Approach to Anatomy.

This small collection includes a presentation Dr. Hudgens gave during the Psychiatry Department grand rounds on October 24, 2000, titled "On the shoulders of giants, a tribute to Samuel B. Guze". An additional accession includes various items related to the School of Medicine student musical "New Facies of 1955" that was organized by the WUSM Class of 1956. Items include three 33 1/3 vinyl records recorded on April 16, 1955, a photograph of Dr. Hudgens singing during the musical, and song lyrics that have been edited by Dr. Hudgens. This collection also includes a brief typed description of Dr. Hudgens experience as a medical student at WUSM (1952-1956) written by Dr. Hudgens.

Correspondence of James Barrett Brown, Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, while chief of plastic surgery at the Valley Forge General Hospital, Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, 1943-1945. Also contains files of photographs of patients illustrating treatments. The collection includes 20 reprints, dating from 1931 to 1942.

This collection contains records of William H. Danforth, Chancellor Emeritus of Washington University in St. Louis, primarily related to his involvement with the Barnes-Jewish Hospital board. Includes correspondence and memoranda related to BJC and Washington University School of Medicine administration, circa 1996-2019, chiefly 1997-2003.

Curriculum vitae, 1997, and drafts and supporting materials on two of Mueller's projects on the history of medicine. For the history of McMaster University Medical School there is the draft of Part I. For the writing of Evarts A. Graham, the life, lives, and times of the surgical spirit of St. Louis (Hamilton, ON, 2002), there are interviews, notes, drafts, and other materials compiled. Of special interest are files containing original correspondence from various persons relating their memories of Graham. There is also an oral history of Frank R. Bradley by Peter D. Olch, original materials about Helen T. Graham and about Olch and his father I. Y. Olch.

The Robert E. Shank papers include correspondence, reports, documents, architectural plans, manuscripts, speeches, and conference proceedings. The files document his interests in nutrition, diet, rehabilitation, and hospital administration. Also notable among them are information on his direction of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health and its programs. RES played a leading role in the construction of two Medical Center buildings, the Irene Walter Johnson Institute of Rehabilitation and the David P. Wohl, Jr. Memorial Clinics and in the development of the services housed there. RES’s papers also contain files on his work with the Office of the Surgeon General of the Army and government-sponsored nutrition programs in Latin America.

Data files, selected short publications, laboratory notebooks and other laboratory records, lantern slides and other photographs on Csapo's research on the progesterone hormone in the physiology of uterine function and uterine muscle contractibility. These files contain data on drug effects of progesterone, estradiol, caffeine, steroids on the ovaries and uterus in humans, rabbits and mice. Later laboratory notebooks are in Series 1, Data, 1946-1979.

The Cowdry papers consist of 74 document series of various lengths, most of which are on paper. The arrangement of the series reflect various phases, locales, and time periods of his long career. In terms of subjects, the collection concerns a variety of basic scientific and clinical areas, among them anatomy, cytology, gerontology, cancers, arteriosclerosis, leprosy, and yellow fever. There is an extensive array of important institutions that figure prominently in this collection: Peking Union Medical College, China Medical Board, Rockefeller Institute, American Society for the Aged, Carnegie Corporation, National Research Council, American Cancer Society, National Cancer Institute, International Cancer Research Council, International Union Against Cancer, American Association for Cancer Research, City of Hope Medical Center (Los Angeles), Tata Memorial Hospital (Bombay), International Association of Gerontology, International Gerontological Congresses, Gerontological Society, Bermuda Biological Station for Research, and the Institutum Divi Thomae Foundation. Of local interest there is material on Washington University School of Medicine administration, the Department of Anatomy and its Division of Cytology, Barnard Free Skin and Cancer Hospital, and Jewish Hospital of St. Louis. Formats of documents comprising the collection include correspondence, departmental records, notebooks, scrapbooks, manuscripts, certificates, photographs, and press clippings. In addition, certain series represent EVC’s complete short publications – papers on scientific topics for the most part – which were bound together in volumes at his request. EVC’s many monographic works and collaborative volumes under single titles are cataloged and stored separately from the collection, but citations to these works may be found in Series 1.
